    What laptop to get?

Hello, I am a student, and I am interested in a laptop. I was looking at http://gateway.com/home/prod/hm_400sp_proddetail.shtml, which is about $1000 USD. The other thing is I am Canadian, so it is about $1500... and of course I don't have a very big budget.

What do you guys think of this laptop? Do any of you suggest any special models or anything?

Just as a note, it can't be a mac, need windows for certain software and support.

Thanks in advance to you all!

I don't know about that laptop (link is broken, I think it's the comma but it redirects before you can fix the mistake...), but I do know that DELL makes good laptops (of all people, eh? ).

Well actually, that computer could easily handle playing Quake 3, Half-Life, UT, and (maybe) UT2k3 at lowest settings.

1058 USD = 1680 CDN (the exchange rate is about 0.63 last time i checked )

I would look into a Dell 2650. I think they have like $300 rebates at the moment.

You might want to read this before buying a laptop:

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

    Ive heard good things about these guys;

    www.powernotebooks.com

I just went through a search for a laptop and looked at the majors (Dell, Gateway, and a few others). Based on what you get for the money, I ordered a Sager from powernotebooks. I havent even had a chance to take it out of the box yet though so I cant vouch for it yet.

Check it out and see how far $1K US will get you, Im sure a lot further than with a gateway.

Hi... I did not get a chance to look into powernotebooks.com in detail, but they seem pretty affordable! The only thing is, with Dell, you know your definitely getting "good" and you'll get support, and you can (most importantly) trust them. Although people offer cheaper (and there are many cheaper then the site you gave me), it is just a big gamble in my opinion.

Of course, that is JUST MY OPINION. I have not yet gotten comfortable with the whole online buying/selling of expensive products.

True ... I have had good tech support from a gateway I owned ... and crappy tech support from a Dell I owned. The sales team at Gateway is too damn commision oriented and try to force feed you crap you dont need. Also they dont seem to know too much about what they are selling.

Anyway look at the options on the Gateway if you go that route ... only $100 more for 0.4 GHz more CPU. Also I noticed that the base price didnt include a CD Writer ... you will probably want that ...

Good luck and please let me know how you make out with whatever you get. I like to keep up with thsi sort of thing as I upgrade at least once per year ...

oh .. one other thought ... make sure whatever you get has a firewire port and get a firewire drive for backing up.

I keep all my files in one place and dump them on the firewire drive every couple of days ... makes for peaceful sleep

Never considered firewire, but forsure, it is useful! Also, as for the CD Writer, I already have one.. not going to buy a new one... yet...
