i found a hardrive in my closet, i've had for atleast 2 years. my dad was stupid and opened the package when we got it, and never installed. it says don't open enless at static free workspace. ya right! . should i try installing it anyway? (it would be on an old computer that doesn't matter if it gets screwed up)

I once gave my friend a HDD at school, and it poured with rain on his way home. He took it out, let it dry a bit, installed it and it worked! So it will probably be alright

Have you even got a spare IDE channel on your PC? Becuase if you don't and you connect it to the same one as your existing HDD you may find it gets slower

Mine never had, they've always just come in a crappy bit of anti-static wrapping

I think they have a mountain of those white puffy things. Last drive I got came in a huge box full of them. Damn things go everywhere.
How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

They come in Large, well padded packages to keep the heads secure. 70% of hard drives fail due to Head damage. If you received a hard disk which rattles, it's because the heads are shot, and will probably only last 6 months, if that!

Maxtor HD usually suffer the most, but for the money, they aren't bad i suppose. If you want quality... go for a Seagate / Western Digital or IBM Deskstar. I wouldn't touch anything else!

    Paul.
