    QUC.EXE - Is this a Win98 file? [RESOLVED]

    I have a file QUC.EXE appearring in my Windows/Start Menu/Programs/StartUp directory.

When deleted it is restored. Properties for file show nothing except location and file size.

Is this a Win98 support file?

If not, any idea what it belongs too as search of registry for quc yields no results.

    Thanks
    David

Sounds like a program is putting it back there. The only program I can think of that start with Q is quicktime... do you have that on there? If so, try going into the settings and disable the startup center or whatever they call it in quicktime.

Google doesn't have anything about QUC.exe, neither do the following, but hey, they're useful
What you could do is find where quc.exe is, have a look at the folder it's in, and it might tell you what the app's for.

    Start up applications
    StartMan (Like msconfig)
Full list of start up apps

    Thanks guys:

Had already searched google and MSDN prior to post.
No familiar with quicktime so don't have it loaded.

    Thanks for the links.
EXE resides in the startup folder so nowhere else to look.

This at least confirms it is not a Win98 file.
Will try and disassemble the file and see what's going on.

Download Adware, as it could be spyware.

And if your using ZoneAlarm or something similar, it will tell u if its accessing the internet.

    Umm...

http://www.spywareinfo.com can tell you how to remove it better than I can.

And have a look in Msconfig...

Thanks guys for all the feedback.

On the track of it right now. Registry startup has one exe listed which then calls quc.exe. In processs of disassembling it, so hopefully I will be able to figure out what it goes to.

Not calling out, and no virsus ID (unless new), so obviously linked to something. Wish people would Id ALL their files so you know what belongs with what.

Usually I use a file monitor when I install but several times didn't -- so this is what I GET!! My apologies to you.

The file guc.exe is not listed in the registry. However, when I rename it after reboot, it shows up with the same name.

THe startUp registry folder lists a file named oyfy.exe in the RunOnce SubKey for StartUp.

I've tried removing renaming both, and both are restored upon reboot.

Have me $#@*^ off now so will do my best to follow this to a conclusion.

    Thanks
    David
