Is the MS Office written in VB?
Hey all,
u can never imagine how pissed off i am!
Why? Because i have a bunch of ignorant teachers at my university (which by the way does not offer a VB course for computer sciences students!). They keep dissing VB, ironizing its powers, and neglecting all its advantages. In other words, they keep telling me: VB is nothing, VB is ****, VB is for kids, a real programmer should never learn VB... Now we all know this is not true. But i need to know if any MS Office set was written in VB? If yes, where can i get a reliable proof for that?? Please guys, i need to stand up for VB, and face my UNIX teacher (who by the way thinks that one day, soon enough, all computers will run a UNIX operating system, because windows is as ****TY as VB!!). Any help on this guys??
Thanx all

And tell your teacher to kiss my white hairy butt. I probably make alot more money programming VB apps for the Air Force than he does teaching Nix.

I would refuse taking a class from any professor being such shmock as yours. Anyways, I'm not sure about MS Office (I've read somewhere about some modules developed in VB) but early versions of Quiken were definitely written in VB3, VB4.
Cheers

I've been told Excel is written purely in VB (though it seemd unlikely, unless a **** load of API's were used. Cader, what sort of things do you have to do for the air force (or was it a joke )

Yeap! I'm pretty sure about this.. That's why i decided to learn vb and become an expert in it, all by my own (of course with using the F1 key, and surfing through the vbforums page!). One day, i'm gonna buy this whole ****ING univeristy with a one month income form programming VB apps.. yea, for sure.. no doubt.

Don't get too rustled... VB is a new language to these old dogs of programming... its only been around 10 years... the last time they probably even saw VB was in its early stages.. vb1 or 2...
You see, they grew up punching holes in cards to program machines... and then they moved to command line interfaces (wow, bet that saved a lot of pain)...
You slap them down a copy VB.NET, and tell them if they don't think its the most versatile, productive, and easy language to use... they have officially declared themselves as dinosaurs...

I think VB is mostly used by business who need custom management softwares or stuff similar. I think not a lot of commercial app sold in stores are made with it.

Not many large commercial apps are made in vb6....
But you can bet many will be made in VB.net....
As far as going to college for programming, well, as long as he's going for a computer science degree... then yes, he probably knows more about algorithms, bits and bytes then you'll ever pick up from hobby programming... but if its some other degree like MIS, don't hold his opinion as solid... MIS programs dabble in programming, but never go into the detail of CS degrees... I should know, I'm a MIS major taking CS courses just to fulfill GER's... and phew, they get serious...

I didn't go to university because we have something here in our scholar system between high school and college. I learned VB there and they also thought me about bits and bytes , etc. But my formation is more technical, pratical than his(computer enginneer)

I think that some of those simple apps may be written in VB. When I was in one of my VB classes we wrote our own notepad. But I think that you're teach has lost it because VB is very flexible and very appropriate for many situations, not all. It just depends on what you are trying to do.

Office is not written in VB.
How times have people said that? People still bother to ask that same question:
Is the MS Office written in VB?

Nearly every major program, created in by a major company, is written in C++, as it just kicks VB's ass.

VB is too slow for something like that.

An arguement used so often that it's basicly worn out is that if a programmer gets paid by the hour to make a program for a company, who's the company going to choose? The programmer that can do it in 12 hours at $8 an hour using c++, or the programmer that can do it in 8 hours at $8 an hour using VB?
That's where VB's strength lies. Yes, you can get the record 50 milliseconds faster in C, but is the company willing to pay the extra money for a small speed increase?

Well... now your changing the original question. If you want something done quickly, and really don't care how well it runs, then use VB, say for example, if its a just for use inside a corporation.
But if its for the outside world, then I think giving the best product available is what matters, and this could be achieved using a lower level language. Eg C, C++

Some of us DID start off by punching holes in cards! Using finger punches first (A = top row + 2nd row together), and then a GREAT advance - you could type on a keyboard and it would punch the required holes to form the letter.
Then we went on to writing all programs out on paper and giving them to a data entry clerk who entered them, and returned a printout saying SOC7 - i.e. it has crashed.
Then we had teletypes - where you could enter the program and see the results.
And, yes, I did learn VBV2 first - then skiped a few years doing other things and re-learnt VBV6.

I wonder how many buffer overrun related hacking problems there would be if C/C++ borrowed a feature from VB - built in boundary checking.

I have used both C++ and VB for real life applications, I like the elegant style of C++. you get ideas flowing while coding in C++ but not so in VB

This thread is kinda like the conversation Eddie Murphy (I think) and Richard Pryor had regarding Bill Cosby saying Eddie's comedy was dirty and he shouldn't have to be dirty to make a living as a comedian. In response to Bill's remarks, Pryor asked Eddie...
Do you make people laugh? Eddie: Yes Pryor: Do you make money? Eddie: Yes Pryor: Then tell Bill Cosby I said to suck my D***. Hey if people pay you to build apps in vb and you enjoy it then F*** them.

Well.. Let me say that i saw some really ****ed Up posts on this thread (from C++ fanatics ). But to make it clear, comig from experienced programmers who at least used VB, their criticism is KIND OF acceptable.
If u go to the beginning of the post, my FIGHT is against those muthasuckers, dick-licking bastards who know **** about VB, and consider themselves as ****ING expert programmers, and they even don't know why and where is C++ better than VB... To hell with them sucking IGNORANTS.. To hell with my *NIX teacher...
