i dont want to reinstall because i have alot of stuff that i cant afford to lose. and there is no step by step startup choice in the startup choices.

I said there is an option "save system setting" or something like that. You wont have to reinstall anything. Just make sure you dont loose your Desktop/my documents

    isnt your CD bootable?!!
You can go to setup and change your boot sequence so that it says "CD-ROM, C:, .....". Just to be sure that you can boot from a CD.

There is a folder in the CD also which will make bootable floppies, this way you can boot from a floppy, and then work with the CD. But I never like to do that. why? because it makes 4 floppies and it kinda takes a while to load from 4 floppies (umm, maybe a few minutes only like 2?)

You need the windows 2000 cd in order to repair windows 2000, BigBosky. The option is called system repair i think and it will reinstall all of the core windows components/files, but will leave data/settings as is.

again, you need the win2k cd in order to do it

When did this occur. Was it previously working? Or what?

    Just one day, didn't work?

well i well i went out of town for the weekend and when i came back and tried to start my computer this was happening. i have yet to figure out what the hell happened. i tried booting into safe mode, command prompt..you name it i tried it. neither the repare option in the install or a emergency repair disk worked. so i had no choice but to re-image and lose all my stuff.

    It may be too late...

When starting Win2k / XP, around the halfway point, it checks the SAM registries for valid usernames / passwords. Is / was your system passworded at all, or did you login automatically?

Reason i ask, is because the SAM register can sometimes be corrupted when a user tries to access a network proxy address. I trust Microsoft have fixed this issue with SP3!

You could of retrieved the data if the SAM registry was the problem, although you would need to manually backup every profile to a GHO image and then re-integrate them back into a fresh install.

If it ever happens again, please feel free to call me, and i'll gladly help you where possible.

Makes you wonder why it worked before you left, and when you return... it doesn't. Did someone else have access to it? A little knowledge is a dangerous thing !

    Regards,

    Paul.
