    Min requirements for Win2k...

Anyone know the absolute minimum system requirements for Windows 2000?

I've got it running on a P200 and 64MB of RAM, 5gb hard disk, and it runs quite well I might add.
All contents of the above post that aren't somebody elses are mine, not the property of some media corporation.
    (Just a heads-up)

I have a AMD 266 with 256MB memory and a 4GB HDD. Works better than a Dell, thats for sure.

Are you running a server out of it?

If so you may just want to consider Linux instead.

Barring that, P266 with 128MB i'd say. A PII and 256MB would be just peachy.

I got it running on a P1 166 Mhz, 32MB RAM, 2 GB HDD machine last week. I don't recommend trying it - it goes continuously into virtual memory and slows to a crawl. But I wasn't going to spend $100 for some obsolete EDO SDRAM to upgrade it. Office wouldn't run right, so we're going to switch back to NT4, and hopefully replace the computer with a better one when the budget allows...

    Get these: Mozilla Opera OpenBSD
I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.

    Minimum Requirements
    Computer/Processor 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU

Memory 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended minimum; more memory generally improves responsiveness

Hard Disk 2GB hard disk with a minimum of 650MB of free space

CPU Support Windows 2000 Professional supports single and dual CPU systems
What are the reccommended requirements then?

    I'd suggest a 500 Mhz+, with 128, if not 256, RAM.

My win2k(although advanced server, not pro) has taken up over a gig before.

    I run on a xp 1600+, 256 MB DDR, 3 HDDs, 120 GB(NTFS), 15 GB(split into a FAT32 win98, and NTFS for 2k), and 1.5 GB(my mp3s, fat32 to work for win98/2k).

Well, I've got a 333 Mhz with 100 and some odd megs of RAM, and a 3.2 gig HDD. I suppose it will be plenty.

    Thanks

Just be careful about incompatible hardware.

I feel like posting again, althought he said "thanks" ... Make sure your RAM is a good brand ram. I've had SO MANY different problems due to my RAM in win2k. It rebootes/freezes if either your ram isnt good or you have two different rams that have a little conflict with each other

Since nobody has actually given you the exact minimum recommended by Microsoft, i thought i would !

This data has been taken from my MCSE exam sheet, so you can be pretty sure it's gospel ! lol

    Windows 2000 Professional Edition
-133Mhz or Other Pentium compatable CPU
    -64mb RAM Minimum - 4Gb Max
-2Gb Hard Drive with 650mb FREE (Extra 500mb FAT32 required if installing over a network)
    -Network Adaptor Card
-Video Display Adaptor & monitor capable of VGA or Higher
    -Supports upto 2 CPU's

    Windows 2000 Server Edition
-133Mhz or Other Pentium compatable CPU
    -128mb RAM minimum - 4gb MAX (256mb Recommended)
-2gb Hard Drive with 1Gb free (Again 500mb FAT32 required if installing over a network)
    -Network Adaptor Card
-Video Display Adaptor & monitor capable of VGA or Higher
    -Supports upto 4 CPU's

    Windows 2000 Advanced Server Edition
-133Mhz or Other Pentium compatable CPU
    -128mb RAM minimum - 8gb MAX (256mb Recommended)
-2gb Hard Drive with 1Gb free (Again 500mb FAT32 required if installing over a network)
    -Network Adaptor Card
-Video Display Adaptor & monitor capable of VGA or Higher
    -Supports upto 8 CPU's

Make sure you're hardware is on the HCL (Hardware compatability List)

    Hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Paul.
