basic computer Q's
i'm 15 and i don't know a whole lot about computers other then how to use them.. i was gonna format and partition this computer, (i haven't ever formatted it, scandisk never fully runs, and defrag only sometimes works) but instead i think i might just create my own computer because i've heard u can get better parts cheaper...would that be to hard for me to figure out how to do?

If you don't know a lot about computers I wouldn't recommend building your own just yet.

Agreed. You are going to have your hands full reformatting and reloading the OS.
What OS are you going to re-install? (Please dear God, tell me it is not XP!)

If it is running slow, perhaps you need to defrag instead of reformatting and reinstalling the OS.
There is a Thread here about a system running slow. Check that thread.

But then how are you going to learn anything? I mean, what do you learn in a basic basic intro to computers courses - what disks and memory, etc. are. What better hands on experience to actually have them and stick them together.

Get these: Mozilla Opera OpenBSD
I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.

Its better to start off with disassembling and reassembling an already assembled PC. Get a good idea, before attempting fully... no?
and ME sucks. Bad choice, man.

Whats wrong with XP? I think its pretty good. You never need to format your comp ever again, just create a restore point on your initial instalation and whenever you think you've installed one too many progs, just revert back to the initial restore point.

Thats how I learned... I was quite poor and had an old comp (basicly someones garbage)... I just upgraded componet after component till I had fully rebilt the computer (I guess it was over the span of a year) so in a way I still use my first computer (well my first computer was a TRS-8 (5mHz?) w/a cassette tape for a hard drive but thats a different story)

If you don't know much about computers head over to MonarchComputer.com and go to the custom computer workshop. they will build and warranty you a computer for really cheap, with no proprietary equipment or other crap. It's about the next best thing to custom built.
I'm bringing geeky back...
