Installing a new OS on another hard drive

A friend of mine gave me his hard drive to install a new Operating System (will be probably Windows 98, 2000, or XP) but it will take a couple of hours to do so. Because I'm installing a different hard drive and I can have two hard drives at the same time, can I install the operating system while working on my old OS (on my old hard drive)?

Usually the windows CD is bootable.

Stick the HDD in, stick the cd in, set the cd to boot, the setup will paritition and format for you.

    Works for 2K anyway.

I wouldn't think it'd be possible. If you have another computer lying around, stick the hard drive in there and install the new OS so you can use your computer while it's going on.

You can have two hard drives at the same time, like you said, but you can't run off them at the same time. That'd require two computers.

You can't install for a different system with Windows, unfortunately.
