    OK, simple things first:

Are your speakers plugged in and working?

Have you tried looking in the Device Manager to make sure everything is alright.

How old is the game? Sometimes old dos games won't work properly in windows.
How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

I have a couple of old dos games that don't play the sound. It's just one of those things. The old games don't support the modern hardware.

PCI cards are unlikely to be supported. However, you might be able to get Windows to emulate an SB16 (might not be so good for MIDI, but you'll get something), depending on your card and drivers.

    How would you do that?

    Depends on the card.

I have no Windows to test with, so..... *shrug*
