Hello all! My first post in the forum feedback area, so I
guess I am losing my feedback virginity at long last?
Awhile ago someone suggested that users put their VB
versions in their signatures so that it is not necessary to
ask which version they are using. i would like to steal
that suggestion and take it a step further -
administrators, what is the chance that such information
could be added to the user profiles? I.E. my post heading
would look something like:

Platform: Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6
VB Version: 6.0 Service Pack 4
just a suggestion. Great site by the way, I thank you and
so does my boss although he doesn't know it

Not a bad idea...but some ppl might abuse it and put stuff there that doesn't belong. John would have to place the OS version on there through php and make sure somehow that people actualy post their vb versions.

yes, it would have to be controlled by John or another administrator. I didn't mean to just put an open area where people could put whatever. Something like some fields on the initial registration screen where you have to enter your version and platform in order to register.

You could have a couple of drop down list boxes on the registration screen that specify which kind of OS,VB version you have. People (who are usually lazy, like me!!) are far more likely to use this than to actually type it in!

It coudn't be done at registration though...because of the already existent members. It should be someplace in the "profile".

The VB version and OS is only relevent if you're asking a question and everyone should assume VB5 or 6 unless otherwise stated.

Also, what about the non-basic forums? There are people who only use C++, so they're in that forum. There would need to be some way of specifying all your versions. However we would end up with information overload .

Its a nice idea, but what happens with multiple OS's. I develop on every windows platform bar 3.x and CE, so would i need to place all of them there?
Iain, thats with an i by the way!

I have a bettter idea,
why don't we just specify it on a thread?
like when there is a new thread for a serious(not chitchat or feedback) forum, you select your compiler version, and OS....

Iain,
Probably being too specific, that level of information is usually not needed on most threads and admin here is not about to make large changes for our every whim.
Most of the time when you read a problem you don't sit wondering "what OS is this guy using" you usually wonder "what DB is this guy having problems with" or something like that and it's more a matter of education for the users.
Questions like
"I wrote a DB app and my friends on NT and it crashed his system, what's the problem? it works fine on my 98 system!"
won't really be solved by any number of new fields, it's a poorly phrased question.
I think the FAQ should have more info about what sort of info to post in a question so we can just reply "read the FAQ ya moron" to those sorts of questions.
I hate when people whinge that their questions never get answered when they don't give any info!!!!
Well, enough Japanese Sake from me :-)
