NT Boot disc
on our windows nt workstations, the administrator ha blocked us from getting on 'selective startup'. I want to get on this, because the administrator has also blocked the running of programs, using a program called ranger. is there any way of making a program that is on a disc, and when the computer starts it stops this 'ranger' program from running. i have the filename of the 'ramger' program that starts up, but all i need is to how to block this program???

hmm have you tried using win xp to make a boot disk? you should then be able to browse the directories and find that program and make it "dissappear", then boot normally.

how do you plan on stopping a program to run? You either have to delete/rename it, or find where it loads. By the way, try running a program on the system that has a system name, like taskman.exe
you know, make a boot disk with solitaire on it for example and rename it explorer.exe or whatever and see if it gets by the program because its named the same as a legit file.
by the way, is the registry locked out? see if you can run any of these programs:
regedit
msconfig
id like to know what the program does when you try to run something from the run box. If you dont have a run box (I.E. its
disabled), go to new task from the taskmanager.
i dont suppose they were stupid enough to make it a killable task?

You may be able to prevent this program from starting by holding the Shift key down when you log on. Whether this is successful or not depends on how the program is configured to run.
If your SysAdmin knows his stuff, he won't have made it that easy I'm afraid.

There is no run command, and reg edit and msconfig are blocked out. Say if you want to go onto another drive on the network, if you typed P: in the OPEN field as soon as you press the : the program that i want to block shuts down the program u r on. i only want to do this so i can run my VB projects from the network. i know the file name of the prog i want ot stop, it is gpclient.exe .
Thanks in advance!

ok thats a tough one, but maybe you don't need to use the :, if that is the only problem.
network computers can also be accessed by their network names in the //computername/c or whatever the drive is shared as. maybe that will help.
can you access the "start new task" option from the task manager?
