vb with oracle

i am able to connect personal oracle 8 with vb in my stand alone machine. now i am trying to connect my vb project with another machine which have oracle 8. in my dsn name in the server text box i am specifying the ip address(192.8.200.6) of the machine where the oracle database is reside. when i trying the above it is giving a error "illegalal operation performed".

do i need oracle 8i to perform the task ?
please help me, thank you in advance.

debu, You didn't mention if your other oracle db in running on a server or not. If your database has been started on the other machine i would check that the tnslistener service is running in services in the control panel. If it is running, stop the service and start it again. Open a dos prompt and do a tnsping DsnName

I've been running oracle 7.3 on my server for several years now. Been wanting to up-grade to oracle8.
