Need Help with Internet Connection Sharing
ok, I need some help with this. I will first state that I don't intend to use this for malicious or abusive purposes etc. We have about 5 computers where I work. All are running WinXP and are networked together. In the server room they are running a PC with Win 2000 server with 3 Compaq towers (servers I guess). All the network connections are connected through ethernet, and all printers are shared, etc. Here's the problem. They took the internet connection away from the downstairs computer, but is still works on all the others. My project is to get this connection back! I've already checked all connections and everthing is plugged in such as the ethernet connections up at the hub. And the hub/router is connected to the DSL modem. So what I'm thinking is that they have disabled the Internet Connection Sharing with that one computer on the network. So my question is where can I go in Win 2000 Server on the main computer to share the connection with that computer again? I'm unfamiliar with Win 2000 server. There's no problem accessing things because they have nothing PW protected. Anyway I work at a Community Center and all we really do there is listen to music and check out basketballs, etc. We need the internet connection downstairs so we can do homework assignments without having to rotate around every hour or so. Thanks for any suggestions.

if it helps.....
If you load up IE on the downstairs computer you get a message saying IE couldn't open the search page.

Just out of interest before you get started, have you made sure that IE (presumably thats the browser you use) is setup to receive the internet through the LAN on the downstairs computer? Perhaps someone accidently changed it...

I have had many a head ache trying to get windows internet connection sharinging working I suggest abondoning it and downloading a proxy such as anologx (www.anologx.com) then just configing ie to run with that. It requires slightly more setup but is less techy about ip's etc than windows

I wonder how many charact
connections up at the hub
If he's using a hub, then perhaps there is no Internet Connection Sharing involved.
You mentioned a hub, in which case, you have to make sure the hub is configured to allow sharing of the broadband connection with the downstairs computer. Additionally, try running the XP Networking Wizard on the downstairs computer, and see if it can detect an internet connection to share.

Win 2000/ XP
I have a home network setup here, and I had to setup IPX/SPX protocols becuase the w=computers were running different a OS. However, Im not sure if you have to do this with 2000 and XP. I know that XP has a networking section on the installation disk, did you try that?? It might work(I strongly emphasize the might!)

There are few things that still need to be known to figure out where the problem is. You mentioned all your computers and servers are plugged into a hub and goes out the DSL modem. Does this DSL modem provide NAT for you? If not then you are probably using public addresses on all your computers (which might mean they pulled one of your addresses and stopped that computer from being on the Internet).
Try to isolate the problem:
1. Can you ping your server's IP address from that machine?
2. Can you ping 4.2.2.2 from that machine? (4.2.2.2 is a an Internet backbone that is never down)
If you cannot ping on both 1 and 2, does your IP address start with 169.254.x.x?
Internet Connection Sharing is not the way you want to go in your environment.
Let me know about 1 and 2 and I can give you some more troubleshooting steps.
