Jungle Man - Hardware questions
JM,
I asked you some questions when you used to be on TurtleTips about hardware. So was wondering if you could answer the below.
I am looking into buying a motherboard but need to know some things:
I am considering a Abit KX7-333 do you know anything about it?
What does RAID mean?
Is the Epox 8K5A2+ any good?
Do all of the Athlon XP processors run at 133mhz FSB?
Many thanks,

I like ABit.
RAID is an IDE structure that supports mirroring and stripping of drives, or both.
Mirroring uses 2 physical drives, to back-up data.
Stripping uses two drives to increase speed.
The capacity of which is the same as one of the drives.
Athlon XP's run at 133 MHz FSB, but with DDR ram it doubles to 266, which you can further increase by over-clocking.

I thought you could use RAID on SCSI as well...

Yeah. You can.
Depends if you have an IDE RAID, or SCSI RAID.
They won't work for both.

- Abit KX7-333 is a great board. Epox 8K5A2+ is awesome.
- RAID is as DigitalError mentioned. sometimes it benefits, sometimes not. Depends on the application. If you work with large video files it is good..
- Yes, all run at 133Mhz FSB.
TurtleTips, bleh that site sucks now. I am over at NXSupport.com now it is my site, well kinda

Good choice. I love my 8KHA+, what a board even if it is rather old. The 8K5A2+ can only be better!

I heard IDE RAID 0 is bad, data loss occurs when bad strips happens which is not rare.
Rule of thumb, u want RAID, go with SCSI.
I wondered if the RAID on the Motherboard can be used as additional IDE ports. ??

trans: Depends on the board maker. the MSI KT3 Ultra doesn't support it in the BIOS even though the chip they use supports it. Epox 8K5A2+ and the Abit board mentioned both support it.
However it can stil be only used for HDDs but you can always use the other four ports for the CDROMs or whatever.
