Just my opinion
I have just read a few first chapters about a VB.NET. The topic that came to my interest is about the .NET Framework. It's theory is like you can run any applications done in VStudio.Net languages on any platform as long as that platform has a .NET Framework installed on that platform.
I think this sounds like JAVA technology to me. Is Microsoft trying to put Sun Microsystems out of business. If Microsoft will take full blast with this, they will definitely have a great advantage over Suns. First there are over millions of VStudio programmers out there which in time will migrate to .Net programming. And VStudio development speed is much faster compared to JAVA.
I am just wondering, what will Sun Microsystems going to do about this? Well just as I have said it's just my opinion. Tnx

First of all, the .Net framework isn't available for any other OS...for now, so it really isn't competing with Java just yet. Yes it is really close to how Java operates. As a matter of fact, they brought in one of the developers of Java to help design and architect .Net. The framework/virtual machine (or what ever you want to call it) is now feasible because of the higher speeds in computers now days. That extra layer really doesn't add much to processing times now. So my guess is this really might be where app dev is probably going. It provides the application developer a wealth of resources that they can immediately put to use and start turning out better apps than before.
Yes Sun implemented it first, and in that respect, MS is copying it from them. But, MS has truly set the standard for VM's. Their's is a lot more optimized and easier to use in my opinion. If MS decides to release the .Net Framework on other platforms, I see Java slowly going away. That is, until Sun can get Java running better than .Net. It is surely going to be a battle between the two nonetheless.

It called a competing product. Java wont die because most hardcore Java devs hate MS for one reason or another.
