The US has a military presence in 132 of the 190 member states of the United nations
Guardian, 18.09.02
Well it's a figure that suprosed me somewhat - do you think this includes US embassy guards or are there genuine US bases in these countries?

I doubt that it includes guards, a "presence" is generally enough to have some sort of impact in a military situation.
The countries they include of course includes places that the US has bases (UK etc), and places where they are on "training excersises", and I expect also where they are deployed as "peacekeepers".
