Visual Studio .NET code name Everett
Guys I got my copy of Visual Studio .NET code name Everett today from Microsoft.
This is the Enterprise Architect version. There are 8 CDs:
- One Copy of Visio
- A Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites CD
- One copy of Visual Source Safe 6.0d
- 2 Program CDs
- 3 MSDN Library CDs
These are the improvements according to Microsoft.
- Highly ANSI/ISO conformant C++ compiler. Greater ANSI conformance enables you to write highly conformant C++ code and take advantage of comunity written C++ libraries.
- C++ gets RAD. New IDE designers and wizards enable the C++ developer to easily create forms-based .NET applications.
- Enhanced C++ floating point performance. Floating point performance is greatly enhanced with new support for P4 and SSE/SSE2. New compiler features that speed floating-point intensive processing by as much as 20%.
- Integrated Smart Device Programmability. Everett delivers first class support for the .NET Compact Framework, enabling you to use your Visual Studio .NET skills to easily program Pocket PC's or Windows CE .NET Powered devices using Visual Basic .NET or C# .NET.
- Integrated Wireless device programmability. Visual Studio .NET now ships with integrated support for more than 140 Internet-enabled mobile devices including Palm Pilots, RIM Blackberries, iMode Phones, WAP Phones, Pocket PC's, and More.
- Integrated J# Programming language. Visual Studio .NET now includes Visual J# .NET, the first Java-langauge development tool to run on a platform offering native support for XML Web services, enabling an easy transition for Java language developers into the world of XML web services.
- Full Support for .NET Framework 1.1 Visual Studio .NET fully supports version 1.0 and 1.1 of the .NET Framework. Version 1.1 of the .NET Framework incorporates much of your feedback from 1.0 and fixes numerous 1.0 issues. Version 1.1 is the first version for the framework to be included with Windows .NET Server.
- Full backwords compatibility. We know that you have significant investments in Visual Studio .NET 2002. Everett provides full backwards compatibilty with Visual Studio .NET 2002, enabling new 'Everett applications' to safely run along side Visual Studio .NET 2002 applications - a feature referred to as 'side-by-side'. Existing Visual Studio .NET 2002 applications can be loaded into Everett and easily recompiled to take advantage of the latest .NET Framework.
I did'nt get a chance to install it. The power supply on my test machine blew out, so I'll have to install it on my laptop in the morning. I'll post some screen shots when I get a chance.

I am away on business right now, can't wait till I get home to get mine. Is there a lot more added, or is it just small stuff (besides the mobile support being built in)?

I did'nt get a chance to check out everything, but there seems to be quite a few changes.
If you use this version to open a project from the previous version of VS.NET it will ask you if you want to convert and tells you that you wont be able to open the project with the previous version anymore.
I'm looking foward to see what I can do about wireless device.
I'll report back when I get some more usage.

MrPolite, the VB building blocks are the same from previous version of VS.NET Enterprise Architect. I dont think these options are included in the standard versions.
Enterprise Template Building Blocks
Visual Studio provides the following building blocks for Visual Basic and for Visual C#. You can add them to any of the projects created with the Enterprise Templates listed above.
Business Facade
Business Rules
Data Access
SystemFrameworks
Web Service Projects
Web UI (WebUI and WinUI)
Win UI (WebUI and WinUI)
Each of these projects is associated with the DAP.tdl policy file and can be added to the Enterprise Templates described above. If you are using a simple template (C# Simple Distributed Application or Visual Basic Simple Distributed Application), you can add these projects only to the parent Enterprise Template project. For all other templates, you can add these projects to the appropriate layer.
If you are a beta tester, MS will send this to you. I signed up to beta test the Smart Device Extensions, then MS sent me a couple of emails telling me that they are going to send out the program. Also, you cant download this from MS. They said it would'nt be available for download. Only beta testers would be able to get the it and they said were only mailing the physical CDs. I got mine yesterday evening.

I have VS.NET Enterprise, but I dont have those building blocks that you say
so if you tell ms that you want to be a betatester, they'll send you the CDs... what if you dont do anything for them? and do they charge you for the CDs? can anyone do beta testing?
EDIT: never mind about the building blocks, I think I was blind, never noticed that

MS does'nt charge you for the CDs. They are sent free of charge.
If you dont do anything with the CDs, MS really wont mind .

I doubt MS is going to chase you down.. When they gave us the cd's the gave us some big EULA and it said no to discuss with thrid parties..but I wouldnt be too concerned..LOL
Ill probably install mine this weekend..

Im hoping they are adding gui tools for some of the command line stuff in this release like the gacutil.
It was surprising some of the things said about vs .net this year. last year it was..VS .NET is soo awesome. This year nearly every session had a mention of something vs .net was missing and some of the dissapointments of things MS removed from the IDE that was great in VB6.
