Vb .net ??new to it need substantiating info...

Ok I've used vb for many years now, and have been away from it for a little while, what is up with this VB.net what is the benefit besides it compiles down to a byte code. Is it so it can run on any OS such as java?? If so can unix run it?? These questions may sound stupid but I need hard facts to substantiate the use of VB.net over Java at my workplace and any help and understanding will be greatly appreciated!! Thanx everyone!

MSIL doesnt compile to bytecode like JAVA but to native machine code so for better performance...

So far only Windows can implement the .NET Framework and the CLR

I know that there are 3rd party vendors out there that are developing a CLR for unix BUT i dont think they are out in the market yet
