What runs on WinXP but not on Win98?

I'm thinking of buying a laptop computer. But most computers now come with Windows XP home edition pre loaded. My desktop computer still runs Windows 98.

Can I run all programs which runs fine on Windows 98 in the same way in Windows XP?

Your best bet would be to check with the manufactures of the applications you use and see if they work on XP. I dont think i have run accross an application that doesnt work on XP that did work on 98, but i havent used 98 since Win2k.

I agree, I just recently upgraded from 98SE to XP Professional and some of my programs weren't supported under XP. For example, I have a music maker program that was version 6 and XP only supported version 7 and up (no patches for 6 for XP support), so I had to upgrade. And my anti-virus worked the same way. So I would take kleptos advice and check.

I forget the details, but if you have an XP install CD, there should be a program on there you can run with the "checkupgradeonly" flag that will tell you what hardware and software you currently have that is or isn't compatible. It's not foolproof and is designed to check for upgrade installs rather than clean installs.

    Get these: Mozilla Opera OpenBSD
I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.

even if you have apps that aren't working under xp, its still worth it to switch if you can find a substitute app or get an updated version.

xp/2k are so much better than 98

    Why XP better?

Why XP is called better than Win 98?

In my opinion, XP is just better. More secure, more drivers, more scalability, easier networking, looks alot better, runs faster, can handle more memory, etc...

XP is a great OS, very hard to crash.. (I've had it for 4 months, had to restart due to big crash.. 3 times)

As with the programs... you can run programs in special modes that simulate the enviroment on which they did run properly.

I've tried this with MS word 98.. but I couldn't get it to stop asking me to revert to something else...

Microsoft has a database of supported Hardware, what about software??

i had a bunch more crashes than that, thanks to a whql certified video driver for my geforce256. Some games would reset the computer. And aol 7.0 had the habit of that until they updated it.

XP is based on NT and as such has more inherent stability.

Still not stable enough for me, though

XP also uses a new data structure that accesses and saves information more efficiently. Form transistions are smoother.

Norton Antivirus 2001 won't run on XP as well as other software that publishes new updates every year. Be careful and check the OEM specs.

I've crashed it 7 times in 4 hours... I hate that god damn operating system. It is the worst thing I've ever used. I'm going to stick with Windows 2000 until it becomes obsolete like DOS. Does anyone know how to make windows 2000 work on a Sony Vaio PCG-FX310? I can't find any network adapter drivers for it, including on the sorry ass Sony website...

I thought that wasn't going to happen until a future version of Windows... XP is just standard FAT32 and/or NTFS...

You have your choice when you install XP, since mine is a new built PC i have a NTFS formatted HD. It improves avg seek time.

Yes, the Sony website is awful...

Try DriverGuide.com, you might have a stroke of luck

I had some bad luck with XP too, but not quite as bad as you-- did you do a fresh install?

I've completely restored it 3 times. The most recent was because it would get to the big ugly "Welcome" screen and just sit there for a few hours, never getting to the desktop. I didn't even change any setting on it, I just shut it down the night before and turned it on in the morning....

That's NTFS, not XP. The XP version is pretty much the same as 2000, which is mind-numbingly similar to NT4.

It reduces seek time because very small files are stored in the MFT, rather than a reference to them.

Nope. It's onboard Intel I believe. I know for a fact that it's onboard, and I am pretty sure it's the intel chipset.

they didnt make drivers for my onboard via audio.
when they finally did, it would work fine but every once and a while it would put out an earsplitting screech.
then sometimes it would buzz and all the sound would sound like someone was talking through a spinning fan. The latest driver (by latest i mean about 3 weeks ago!) finally fixed that.

The problem's not with XP. XP has all the drivers to run *choke* smoothly. It doesn't crash because of drivers. I want to run windows 2000 on it. That is where my driver problem comes in. I just want to get their damn XP Home off this machine and put 2000 on it. I've run into so many problems with XP. I can't connect to my network, even with the right drivers because there is no way to view the entire network. I can't search my hard drive because I go to Find Files and try to search, but it tells me that the webpage is unavailable, since I can't get on my network and get on the Internet... why does it need to go to a website to search my local drive? That makes me wonder. Why did Microshaft decide to make XP so dependedant on the internet?????????????

    Search..

Goto Start - Search - For Files and Folders - > Etc.

How can you run into trouble with this??

If its from Internet Explorer then, you'd have to turn stuff off I guess..

This was by going to Start->Search->Find Files or Folders...

It asks me if I want to go online or work offline. I've tried both. The work offline gives me that right away. The go online button processes nothing for a little bit, then says cannot connect to website and does the same thing...

    XP vs NT

just a note on XP. at work (govt) I hand NT 4 on a PII 400, and that ran faster than my "new" machine: a PIII 800 w/ XP.

...try to convince me that XP is better

well, how about i convince you xp is better than win m.e.?

nt 4.0 is nearly as fast as win 95.
If i could get good driver support, i would use win 95 still

    Re: XP vs NT

Yeah, and Windows 3.1 is faster than all of them, smaller footprint, less overhead, doesn't mean it's a better OS.

vfluckey, there's a good medium between NT and XP, it's called Windows 2000. The stable core used in XP minus the bloat in XP, and many of XP's "good" features. XP is a stupefied version of 2K.

I'll second that. Windows 2000 is the most decent operating system to come out of Redmond.

well win 31 simply blows because nothing will run on it. Every program i own will run under win 95. EVERY ONE.
try saying that about ANY other operating system, even win 98. I can't run some dos games under 98 because you can't free enough conventional memory. ME gets rid of dos altogether (supposedly). xp has compatibility issues with not only DOS but 95 and 98 programs as well. The fact is that win 98 was merely a service pack for win95 and win me is the same for 98. there is no real difference in them except for some interface issues. I realize you can't run .net studio on 95, but you can install the .net framework on it and run .net programs. So currently, if i were to have it my way, i would be running 98se on this machine. And that is only because 95 is no longer supported by microsoft and 98 supports multiple video cards.
2000 is my 2nd favorite os. its fast and more importantly it kicks the rest of them in the nuts for stability. ive never seen a 2000 machine crash. i HAVE seen nt and xp machines crash.
Windows ME basically just sucked all the way around. The interface was dumbed down and the whole os was slowed down. It currently holds the record for the slowest microsoft os.

    Question

I wrote a program and it runs on Windows XP but not on any other versions of Windows and it used to run on 98 before I changed it into XP. Is there a way to get it to work? If you want to see it then copy the next line and paste it into your browser address bar:
    http://www.angelfire.com/games4/sony...m/click_me.htm

    thanx for your help,

i just ran your program on win 2000 and it works on it...
so we can rule out you compiling it as a .net program since i never downloaded the .net patch.

Midgetsbro i might have an answer to your question about "why does my computer need to connect to the internet to search my hard drive"
it isnt actually doing that. They've embedded IE severely into the operating system in xp to the point that you can't even turn active desktop off anymore. The search companion that you see is some sort of web page. i think its a web page that calls vba code and does all searching, etc. that way. Since that file is corrupted, you get the standard "can not display page" stuff.

I have used windows 3.1 at home and at work. Nice OS was big for it's time, but it's time has come and gone. Next used 95 at home NT 4.0 at work. 95 looked really cool but crashed a lot. NT 4 was rock solid but didn't play games well. Switched to 98se at home, big improvement over 95 IMHO. Only crashed once in a while, mostly do to me tweaking it, LOL. Next I gave win 2k a try, finally an OS that was stable. Also let me play all my games, gotta like that compatibility mode for the old ones. I tried XP, didn't like it, slow, resource hog compared to any other M$ OS. Was buggy and prone to freeze ups on my rig. Doesn't seem to work well with old PC's, made yesterday. Probably works well with new PC's, made today. For me on my PC 2k is it. It is stable, 6 months without a freeze up or BSOD, and runs all my software including games. I may eventually go to XP, kicking and screaming, but for now it's 2k all the way. One thing I did find was Easy CD Creator and windows XP don't play well together. Suddenly all my direct Cd's with my drivers and apps were useless in XP. I had version 4, even with version 5 you need a patch to make it work. I had some hardware that I didn't have drivers for but I got lucky. XP had native support built in. XP has the compatibility mode built in to it also. I have never tried it with apps, and never tried it in XP. It worked for me in win 2k playing old games like Mist. It might be worth your while to dual boot with 98 and XP. If you run into problems with XP you have 98 to fall back on. I triple booted 98SE, 2K pro, and XP Pro for a while. I only run 2k now.
PC performance buffs have long measured hardware advances using a few simple metrics: Is it faster? Is it bigger? Does it have more blinky lights?

The good thing about having XP at work is that it crashes so much you only get half the work done during the day, and the other half you spend rebooting. That way you get paid to sit around and watch the pretty boot screen.
