AVI or MPEG???
I record TV episodes and such on my computer using a coaxial cable hooked up through my video card. Well, anyways, when I export these files, they are humungous. ITs almost disgusting, infact, its gruesome. A 30 minute file takes up an ungodly 300mbs!!!!! Right now, its in mpeg-2 format, but I want to find a way to convert it into mpeg-4 or avi. I have the divx 4 codec, but I need software to convert the mpeg-2 files to mpeg-4 or avi. So, I have two questions, which format compresses the movies better, and what software should I use to convert these files. Please help! I have a 60gig hard drive, and I already have 55 of those used!!! And I only have about 12 hours of Simpsons, Friends, and other TV shows on there! PLEASE HELP!!!

Good Ol' Platypus
Use VirtualDub to capture. (http://www.virtualdub.org/)
You can choose a plethora of capture techniques there!

Monday Morning Lunatic
Just as a quick mention, AVI is a file format, it doesn't specify anything about compression method...

uh i have about 55 gig of movies too...
the only difference is that i burned them onto cds
the best compression is from the divx codec. go to www.divx.com and they have a FREE encoder. Keep in mind that the MAIN size of file affector is probably the resolution you record it at. 640x480 contains FOUR TIMES the pixels of a 320x240 recording, which is just fine for recorded television. The divx codec works for .avi files.

Yeah, it is. If you're using virtualdub, go into Video -> Compression, and select DivX .... where .... is your version (if it's older it could be DivX Video v3 or somehthing like that. Then you configure it for the bitrate.

I think that he is going to be *astonished* how big an AVI is going to be with 30 mins of 'the Simpson' on it.
