Well It's not a worry, more a hope that the creit card companies computers go down and somehow whipe all credit records (please god)
The Y2K thing is a great front for hackers though

Yes, wiping out all the credit card information would be a very wonderful Christmas present from the Computing Gods (albeit a late present...). Although, I think that any hackers (and criminals in general) who think that they will be able to hide their crime behind the mask of "Y2K" are only fooling themselves, and being extremely naive about the subject. Sure it's something that a lot of companies are worried about, but by the same token, I believe that because of that they have also spent a great deal of time and money preparing for the worst. Anyway, just my humble opinion on the subject. I'm glad to see all the comments pouring in already, I hope they keep coming in!

Y2K - No.
Terrorism - Yes.
But I do think there will be some problems with what is being called a "corrosive effect" regarding Y2K. Rarely accessed portions of main programs still contain six digit dates. As these portions are accessed throughout the first few months of 2000, errors will occur.

A few things:

Why didn't I think of writing a program that does absolutely nothing except have a few progress bars and lots of graphics that says "your computer is now y2k compatible." If only I had written it months ago and gotten it published, I would be a millionaire off of all those stupid people who only understand how to turn their computer on and send emails and never bother to try stuff with their computer.

There are so many wacky people coming to Montana because it's so big and has so few people. They all expect mass chaos, but little do they know that if Russia accidently sends off a bomb, it will most likely hit Malmstrom Air Force base smack dab in the middle of Montana, the state with almost as many ICBMs as people (a slight exaggeration). Seriously. There are lots of companies around selling y2k readiness kits and bunkers and junk like that. It's funny in a not very sort of way.

Aren't windows 95/98 computers good until 2070 or something like that? "what, me worry?" (I think that's Alfred E. Newman)

speaking of hacking and the millenium, "Entrapment" was a very good movie. I highly recommend it.

Back in 1992 I arranged a system to sell tickets with a dedicated '286. (No, not Vb, the app runs in compiled Quick Basic). It is still in perfect use!
A few days ago I tested it against Y2K. I changed date to dec 31, and time to 23:57, then waited a few minutes and printed a ticket.
Not to my surprise, the ticket said "01 - january - 1980"
Well, I changed date to 1980 and print "year + 20". Now I'll have to worry again in 2020!!!

I noticed you're in Moses Lake, WA. When I was a kid, about 30 years ago, I lived in Maple Valley, WA. (Western Washington between Seattle and Enumclaw.) We used to go to the "Pot Holes" every summer to do some great Crappie fishing.
Are they still there?
When the country shuts down at midnight 12/31/99 maybe I'll go there to fend for myself.

Hey Bob Baddeley, There is already a program that does what you described. I have seen it in the store. PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY BUYING this program, and it's selling like hotcakes. It's fruad, but no one can seem to prove it. I couldn't beleive it when I saw it.

I had asked the stare clerk about it (Pretending I didn't know anything) and he gave me this speel about how it will check your system and fix your computer for the Y2K. Then I started to name all these computer parts, showing I wasn't as dumb as I pretended and his mouth dropped. He then admited that he really did think it was a program to help fix computers. I knew he was lying through his teeth when I shown him the program REQUIREMENTS. It said Pentium II - 266 or higher.

Terrorist - naa, I have 1,000 rounds for my M-16 and 500 for my SIG.

Seriously I think the terrorist will cause more of a problem than the Y2K bug will.

Yes, I agree with you Lloyd, I think that the terrorist problem should be much more of a concern than Y2K. In fact, the Mayor of Seattle agrees with that as well. That's why he cancelled the Millenium celebration that was to take place below the Space Needle! But at least they're going to still have fireworks. Also, Representative Doc Hastings is going to be hopping on a plane for New Year's to show everyone how strong his faith is in the airlines being safe, and essentially, no Y2K bug. Just a little FYI, helping everyone keep up on the current events, because I know how easy it is to lose track of the outside world, when you're a programmer!

A couple of years ago it was reported that IT staff in a major UK bank would receive a Y2K bonus of about £20K if they stayed with the company until March 2000.

Are any of you expecting to receive a bonus of this nature?

Y2K problems?
One of the projects I've been working was to replace a program written in APL and running on DOS on a 386 because it could not be guaranteed to be millennium compliant The PC runs 24 hours per day 7 days per week.

The PC we put in its place is fairly high spec and running NT4.

I've been told that Windows 95 crashes after about 3 months if left running continuously.

I'm not at all convinced that the new PC will be as reliable as the old one! Some Y2K fix that will be!
