    An XP Question...

Does anyone know how to remove Windows Media Player 7 from an XP machine and put 6.4 on instead? I dislike 7 greatly, even when I change the skin to the "classic" look. I tried downloading the 6.4 version from the microsoft site, but it said something about not supporting Windows 2000. I am using XP, not 2000 Anyway, does anyone know how to get WMP 6.4 running on XP and know how to remove 7.x??

    Thanks

    I haven't figured it out, but it's a slow, resource-hogging, bloated piece of ****!

That's pretty dense considering Win2000 comes with 6.4

I don't like 7 either, which is why despite the best efforts of Windows Update I have resisted.

Thanks! I didn't know that the old mplayer2 would be on there. I'll just go and change all the shortcuts and the file associations.

PS I use Winamp for music... my laptop came with musicmatch jukebox and it was the 2nd thing I removed, first being Real Player.

There are 4 reasons I think MusicMatch Rocks:

    1) Nothing fancy... does what its suppose to
    2) Burning CDs is a piece of cake
    3) Dont have to use any samsung **** software to connect to your Yepp MP3 player... u can use MusicMatch
    4) U can use it to download music to older MDs (like Sony R909) with the PCLinkup Kit

...something tells me the main reason why you like it is because of the compatibility with players which is fine. and the cd burnings good, but the it is waaay to fancied up, to bulky and congested

but i guess it depends on how much you like the UI.

the UI is fine... it doesn't suck nor is it great but what comes into play is the features... I have 512MB of ram so it really doesn't matter to me how bulky it is... It uses about 9MB of Ram while Windows Media player uses 7... not really much of a difference.

Maybe one day I'll do that but at the moment I don't have the time to provide the support for a commercial product.

I have actually developed version 2 of MiniMP3. It's more robust, with a few more features. Specifically It's written in C++ and hence is smaller, and doesn't have the dependency on the VB runtimes. It's been completed for about 2 months now and just needs compiling and putting up on the website. I might get round to it eventually

Does it support M3U playlists? I can't get it to play mine.

If you need help playing it, I can try to help. I know that only lines without # at the beginning are files, the rest is just comments and song info for winamp. I would like it if it played m3u, then I wouldn't need to have winamp. Also, maybe you could implement something like I have in CounterAmp, where you control the program with Control+Key combos.

Nah, not yet it don't. I tried to find details on the format of the files but couldn't. Do you have details if so it would be great if you helped me inplement support.

Not sure what you mean about control+Key combos. Do you mean If I could say press Ctrl+P while writing a word document it would play a track? If so that sounds like a good idea.

What would be awesome is if you could integrate the player's interface into the Taskbar. Ever seen how Zone Alarm has that little yellow bar that you can turn on, in the form of a Quick Launch or something but it's totally different?

    That'd be awesome

Sounds interesting but not really sure what you mean. I did use zonealarm a while back but can't think of the bit you mean. Do you have a screenshot?

sorry for the delayed response... just got back from Hawaii.

The M3U format is relatively simple. Each line will be either preceded by # or nothing. If it's a #, then it will be a comment unless you are using Winamp, it will try to read data from it.
    Code:
    #EXTM3U
    #EXTINF:312,Metallica - Battery
    C:\Music\M\Metallica\Master of Puppets\01 - Battery.mp3
    #EXTINF:516,Metallica - Master of Puppets
    C:\Music\M\Metallica\Master of Puppets\02 - Master of Puppets.mp3
#EXTINF:397,Metallica - The Thing That Should Not Be
C:\Music\M\Metallica\Master of Puppets\03 - The Thing That Should Not Be.mp3

    #etc
The format is easy to pick up, and you should be able to read the lines with your program. The #EXTINF:xxx, name - track

About the control+key combos. In my counteramp program, I can control winamp by pressing Control+NumPadX where X is a number or key on the number pad. It will then do play, pause, etc. You can do this with your program by using a timer and GetAsyncKeyState. That's what I do. I can control it from any program, which makes it unique. It would make your media player better if I could hit control+2 and have the song pause or whatnot. Or make the keys customizable for people that need that.
