IRC n00b question.
I have used irc like here and there for a few minutes over the last few years. I now need to start using it for some people I need to chat with. Problem is, I have always noticed that when I got into a channel, no one is talking. Or at least it appears that way. Certainly a channel of 100 people isnt that quiet. This has always been the case when I checked out irc. Somewhere I saw a brief mention of 'voiceing'. Is this something I need to set somewhere or what? Surely there are some irc experienced people here. Im using mIRC by the way.

voiecing is when you get voiced that means you are one step closer form being an OP (this has NO relation with what you are looking for)
and yes there are channels of 100 peopls that dont talk. I already got a channel like that, I said "HI" and someone one said "SHUT UP or get kicked" so I said "why?" "coz its a silent channel"
go figure...

Nah, 100 silent people is about par for the course.

Thats pretty weird. I would imagine a silent channel if it was like a porn or warez channel and people are just trading files, but it is not one of those.. No..really! It isnt!

In many channels, most of the talking gets done in private, or over DCC. Some people just set up their own channel for the duration of their conversation. Which network are you on, anyway?

it was irc.stratics.com. #eve-online. It may just have been that everyone was waiting for an EVE developer or something. I cant go there now though as I am at work.

The m option wasnt set for the channel so it wasnt moderated which mean only ops @ and people with a + beside their name can talk. This option was not set. Im going to try again tonight after work though. I could have been experiencing some delay/lag also.
