The beats that music makes can over a small amount of time set your brain's rhythm. The brain's rhythm, or brain waves as they're better known, determine the state of mind which we're in. The different brainwave types are Alpha, Beta, Delta and Theta (search on yahoo and you can learn what all these state are about). This research has led to many specific types of sound and music being born. The Monroe Institute for example invented a sound technology called Hemi-Sync http://www.hemi-sync.com/ (Called this because it synchronises the two hemispheres of the brain). This technology can be used in a number of ways such as inducing relaxation as well as putting the brain in a state of alertness which is good while studying.

There's an effect of listening to classical music which scientists call 'The Mozart Effect'. Listening to Mozart can apparently increase a persons IQ over time and just generally make them feel better. You should buy a book on this subject to learn more as it's quite interesting...I'm sure you've all head about plants growing better when classical music is played constantly Apparently listening to POP music has a detrimental effect on the brain because the beat patterns are very simple and basic...You've been warned

a scientific study was done on this in a lab at where I work for Army Intel. They got 20 rats and played one score(computer gerated) for one and one for another. It was a test to see what if any effects altering brain waves would have on enemy troops. It was actually quite interesting, in that the rats being played the first score all successfully navigated a standard maze 60% faster on average than the others after 10 tests. The group that was played the second score actually would refuse to eat most of the time, and starved. Funding was cut before enough trials and tests could be done to ensure the effect worked for humans, so I am allowed to talk about it.

i'm not sure if it would work in warfare...especially if you're close enough to the enemy so they can hear the sounds...adrenaline and fright would probably cancel it out...still very cool though

That's interesting snakeeyes1000. I'm sure there are military departments around the world who have experimented with this. Not only could it be applied to warfare, but also it may be helpful in trying to extract information from prisoners Surely has to be better than torture...for the prisoners at least

they should do a study on teenagers who listen to the music constantly and with those who doesn't.
    Massey RuleZ! ^-^__Cheers!__^-^ Massey RuleZ!

    Did you know that...
The probability that a random rational number has an even denominator is 1/3 (Salamin and Gosper 1972)? This result is independently verified by me (2002)!

Don't forget that it depends on the type of music. A teenager listening to Boyzone constantly for 1 year will show different results than one listening to Beethoven for a year

Some thing that I just remembered and would like to add. I saw on T.V. a long time ago a report about the effects that music has on children. The scientists said that they discovered that listening to music can improve a person's mental arithmetic skills.

I saw this report on the BBC and have managed to find it on their web site http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/297073.stm
