Is Intel's Pentium 3 1.2Ghz good? Or Celeron's 1.5Ghz good? Why is Celeron 1.5Ghz less priced than Pentium3 1.2Ghz? Will AMD's AtholonXP 1800 out fast the two? How fast is AtholonXP 1800?

Pentium 3 1.2GHz - it's kind of getting outdated, and only uses SDRAM.

Celeron 1.5 - awful, don't go near it

The XP1800 is about as fast as a 2 gig Pentium 4....

BTW, the Celeron 1.5 is cheaper because it sucks so badly. it uses the NetBurst architecture (same architecture used on the P4) which is worse than the architecture the P3 uses. That is why the P4 2.0 or 2.2GHz processors can get stomped by other chips that are lower clocked notably AMDs.

Yeah, as if the P4 architecture isn't crippled enough, they dont scale it high and equip it with 128K of cache...

Celeron's are supposed to be cheaper than their proper pentium counterparts because they have less cache on the chip itself.
Its by design that they're underpowered.

I would go with an AMD over an intel unless i was able to purchase a Xeon. As far as i know Xeon were originally developed to out perform standard p3's. With up to 2Mb of l2 cache and running at processor speed you cant go wrong. My friend does CAD stuff for a machine shop and works on an SGI machine that has twin Xeon processors. The processing power is a sight to see.

The Xeons were released with the original PentiumII processors, at the same time that the Celerson was released.
It does floating-point* mathematics faster than the PentiumII and its Celeron counterpart.
It also has the option of 512k, 1024k and 2048k l2 cache.

When the PentiumIII was introduced, a P-III Xeon was released also.
Then when the PentiumIV was released, Xeon was released under its own brand name.
So now its just called Xeon.

*re the floating-point mathematics: The Xeon is designed as a server processor, to do the mathematics that servers do, better than other processors.
I suppose its prececessor was probably the PentiumPro.
Anyway, as far as I know, its floating-point math that this CPU does faster, but I may be wrong.

Well even if they do, the Itanium has been out for what.. about 2 years now ?
And now there's the Itanium2.

Intel aren't pretending its for 32bit applications.
Its for hardcore 64bit applications, eg. 64bit SQL Server running on 64bit Windows2000 / Windows .NET

No room for 32bit code on those platforms

the 1800 has a 1.53Ghz clock which is faster than either the 1.2 or the 1.5. simple maths man!

Plus it's an Athlon...

That's different, the Celeron is a pile of crap. The Athlon is not.

a) the athlon clock is faster
b) the athlon is more hardcore anyway

Yes, the Celeron not only uses the same awfully inefficient architecture that the P4 uses but it's crippled with 128K of cache where I believe the 1.2GHz P3 has 512K of L2 cache...that's obviously not the only dependent factor since the Athlon XP has 256K of L2 cache and whips both of them...and probably is cheaper.

Asus A7V333 is Asus' best Athlon XP board.

However the Epox 8K5A2+ is $20 cheaper and has the features of the A7V333 (minus COP and FireWire...COP is dumb to have anyway, as long as you properly install a heatsink you won't need it. FireWire is good but firewire controllers are cheap cheap cheap) plus integrated network, an onboard RAID controller and an extra PCI slot.

$127 for a standard board with USB2 and FireWire?
Or $105 for an overclocking-oriented board with USB2, NIC, RAID, and 6 PCI?

You do the math.

Oh BTW, if you don't need the RAID feature, the Epox 8K5A2 is the same board minus the RAID, for $90.

If I had an 8K5A2+ it would whip the Asus A7V333 in any benchmark, and I bet I'd overclock higher too.

Well if you want to be that closed minded and snotty you can take a flying crap at a rolling donut for all I care. When you buy Asus, you are buying the name, take off the name "Asus" and it's just another board in the bunch, immediately ruled out because of high price.

Hmm, Asus does make nice graphics cards, although rather overpriced (much like their motherboards). Don't be quick to judge something based on looks.

I haven't had the experience of seeing their notebooks or "other craps".

And before you ask, Epox does not make graphics cards
