Smile It never rains, but it pours!

Couldn't get a job four a month, now two come along at once.

Now, which one should I take?

The first is a permanent job back with my old employer (in the company that went bust). He's set up a new company and wants to re-employ me.

The second is a contract job who are offering double the the salary that I would be getting at the other job. It is only for two or three months however.

    Hmmm....difficult decision.

If you know it's gonan be around for a while, go with your old boss as the market is really ****e at the moment, and once you've finished that contract there is no guarantee of getting work

Toss a coin, that's what I'd do (seriously!)

    Is the contract local?

It sounds like you must be good at interviews, maybe you could do some on my behalf.

True, I couldn't be sure of finding another contract job afterwards.

    But it sure is tempting...

As it took 4 months to get this far, the contract job will have you back there in 3, and as your former employer wants you back that means he values you, so my two-penneth worth would be to say "Stick with what you know and go for the stability option"

Well, both jobs are in Devon.

The contract job's in Sidmouth and the perm. in Exeter.
It sounds like you must be good at interviews, maybe you could do some on my behalf.
Not really...They just wanted to get someone local and not have to get someone down from London.

    Yes, it was an agency.

    They're called ERG International

I didn't register with the agency or anything, I just spotted the job on JobServe.

    /enter contractor stage right

Congrats simon!!! In these days and times, that's quite an achievement!

Double the salary? So you'd have to work 6 months as a permie in order to generate the same cash you'd earn as a 3 month contractor - 3 months is eneough time to find another contract IMO...

What kind of work is the contract work? If it's Project based, you're unlikely to be there for only 3 months unless you're a complete muppet.

Have you contracted before? If not, it may be too much of a hassle setting up a company etc etc - Permie would be better. If you have contracted, I'd take the contract

If you want to have hassle free contracting like I am, with not having to worry about IR35 and the like, check out www.parasolit.co.uk. haven't had a problem with them

I would be careful about the concept of IR35-free unmbrella companies - the IR have explicitly stated that umbrella companies are also viable to IR35, and the only way you can avoid it is by being a legitimate software development company.

IR tend to check accounts after 3 years of a companies lifetime - umbrealla company or not - one solution (which is what I do) is to close down your own idependent company every 2 years, and re-establish a new one.

    I have never contracted before.

The agency said they would pay me through them so I don't have to set up my own company.

Sounds good (as long as you ask about the hidden charges) - depends on the project too I guess....
