    What's a trans-sexual?

    Common traits?

To what extent can a person undergo a sex-change from male to female? Is it reversible?
    Would this do
    to make it allright?

I think they can't mostly get the parts, but they can't reproduce. But I could be wrong about that.

Do they have a gender problem physically too or is it just in the mind?

Here's what I know X man... I had a friend many years ago who had undergone the male to female gender realignment as it is called..

To start with the male has to start taking female hormones for a few years. and has to live as a female, during this time breasts will grow and facial and other hair will be reduced.. (but not eliminated).. Once the decision has been taken to make it permenant..

The operation is a major one... the ***** and testicles are removed and a fake vagina is created with the skin and a small piece of the ***** and nerves are left for stimulation... but obviously the new woman cannot reproduce.. and is unlikely to be able to orgasm. In addition the person has to take hormones for the rest of their life to maintain their femaleness.

And no... it is not reversible.

    Hope that helps somewhat

    sure does help, D

in fact, u pretty much answered all i wanted to know...

a friend (actually just an acquaintance), who came across as a cool guy... well now i hear that he's actually been in a state of depression a long time. He's had this tendency to believe that he should've been a female, which someone told me is a mental trait of transsexuals.

Now this guy has *actually* decided to go for a sex change! This absolutely shocked me at first...

You're right - he's already started having oestrogen (sp?), and reportedly, was very happy when the doctor referred to him in his last prescription as a "she"

Conservative as the indian society is... I have no idea whatsoever how he intends to cope up post-operation. what happens to his job environ? his social life? And then, he's only 23 something. What happens to marriage? How does a natural guy take to his , well, transformation?

well, my first opinion was that it's only in the mind - he's a "complete" man right now, so no problems there - but if he gets on to more man-like activities like weight training, hanging out more with the guys and doing adventure sports or something, it might get him out of his depression and knock his plan off.

But then, like he said... he's not interested in 'manly' activities at all. And what if he's not satisfied after the change also?

    "I'll commit suicide"

There's a couple of people where I work who are TS's. In England, I believe you have to live as a woman (without the op) for 2 years before you can have it.

Sarah (formerly known as Dave) went to Holland (I think) to have it done to skip the wait. S/He is now classed as a women in England. Still comes to work on a 1200cc motorbike though....

Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you...

Are they married? How'd their spouses take to it?
How'd u adjust if you knew them pre- and post-operation?

X man.. it is very unlikely that doing *manly* activities will have the effect you think it will.. if this guy really thinks as a female all it will do is make him more miserable.. and Ben is right in Australia the person has to live as the opposite sex for 2 years also.. there is a very good reason for this..it is not a decision to be taken lightly and because of the irreversibility the person should be as sure as possible that they really want to live as a member of the opposite sex.. and indeed that they will be accepted as a member of the opposite sex.

The woman I knew was very attractive.. and you would not have known that she had previously been a man.. but there is still huge issues with trans-sexuals in being accepted by members of the opposite sex..(how would you feel if the gorgeous woman you were dating told you she had started life as a man?) and frequently they end up being marginalised and having difficulty attracting straight men partners.

I know my friend ended up dating gay men, because she just could not be accepted once the truth came out.

    thexchord,

Scarah's* a bit of an odd one though as s/he still fancies women. Makes it a bit awkward for her colleagues, I'd imagine.

    DragonFly,

Sarah's pretty obviously a man despite the cosmetic differences. Besides walking like John Wayne, she also has hands like spades.

When I go out with my dykes, we used to go to a place called 'Manhattan Showbar' which was owned and run by TV's and TS's. It was a top night out, but some of the bar staff were a little scary. There was one woman (ex-man) who used to do a lot of the cabaret and it was only the trained eye that could tell s/he was previously a bloke.

I, for one, would climb the walls if I found out the girl I was seeing was previously a man. It certainly wouldn't interfere with any friendship aspect, but any kind of sexual relationship would turn my stomach. Maybe I'm just old fasioned....

*deliberate spelling mistake - it's her nickname - I never said we were mature about it.....

    umm...

(unfortunately?) there's no rule as such as in india - about having to live for 2 yrs as a woman before the operation. in this case, the guy has had the tendency since a long time and had told his mom abt it about 5 years ago too (which unfort isn't a big help since his parents are not on terms either)

how would you feel if the gorgeous woman you were dating told you she had started life as a man?
that's what i freaked out on too when i was thinking about this! my friend (who told me this stuff) and I absolutely felt we'd take the first train out to nowhere, leaving everything behind and just scamper!

we were also discussing how tough it must have been to "make" this decision... i felt it must be easier to actually commit suicide with a shotgun rather than make this decision...

    thexchord,

None of the TS's are married, though one of the TV's is. I don't know how their spouses cope as I don't know them that well well. Scarah is single and s/he's the only one I know to any degree.

It must a tremendous amount of determination and willpower to go through with something like that, though I really can't follow the thinking behind it.

    Each to their own though.....

Oh that has the bells ringing DF... I think that it was amazing how accepted it was in the culture. Now if they tried that in Wollongong some big beefy bloke would throw a pie at them or summat
