Thinking about buying a server.
Im thinking about buying a web server. I think that im gonna go with a dell power edge. Any suggestions? Also..... I guess most web servers people own are dedicated servers but could a server be used as a web-server/ personal computer? Thanks.

Most servers can be used as a workstation, but it's not recommended. Some Terminal Services configurations prevent logging onto the server from the console unless you're Administrator.

one thing to consider is how much power they consume. Its like running another refrigerator in your house. Can you afford it?
Also, you can probably get something cheaper off ebay. A seller called ecs_computer_mart has a huge supply of previous servers (P2 450/128/cd&dvd/win98/office2k) that I got for $175.01 including shipping. (Thanks to justin for pointing that out to me)
They were servers in their previous life....
Also, run linux

Yeah i thought about the power requirements and my parents are cool with it. I could see how a server uses a lot of power though, with those twin Xeon processors, large power supply and all.

Dont buy dell, they will rip you off. Much cheaper building or buying from monarchcomputers.com or similar company

Buy a p2 450mhz for $200 and run unix or linux on it.
Thats all you need for a webserver.

Hate to hijack your thread dilenger but I was wondering what kind of connection you need to run a webserver and if there is any kind of connection you can get that doesn't matter how far in the sticks you live.

It just won't work very well ADSL will just about handle 3 or 4 simultaneous connections, a 56K modem can't handle even one.
Where 'connection' is at least 5K/sec download speed.....

Kinda figured that you could do it with any connection. How about the second part of the question?

Hell. I'm hosting my site on a 768/128 ADSL line. And the server is a Pentium 200MHz with 96megs of EDO RAM. hehe. It's running Windows 2000 Professional, Genome@Home, MySQL, PHP, OmniHTTPd, WarFTPd, and AOL Instant Messenger... Hasn't needed a reboot in over a month.

A server is a souped up computer with a few extras. A lot of system tweakers like myself use big cases which are defined as server cases.
A server can run any desktop app just that you usually have no use to. I run a server off my desktop, the contents I can't disclose
For a basic web server, get any old machine. Doesn't have to have a super fast video card or some servers don't even use monitors or keyboards. Just a fast (7200rpm) hard drive and a good connection is all ya need.
Hell if it's dedicated just run Linux on it, not like you'll be using it for much else. Linux has less overhead for a dedicated server than Windows does.
I'm bringing geeky back...

The server at my house just sits up on a shelf, and simply does our internet connection sharing, and file serving. Its running linux, just for fun =). No moniter, though it has a keyboard and mouse (for no real reason, everything done on it is over telnet). Its been running a good month, and the reboot before that wasnt necessary at all, and before that it was going strong for a few months.

I use my server to go on AIM every day while I am playing games. That way I can talk to people between games, like in MCM2 or when I am dead in games like Jedi Knight 2.

Similar to mine, although mine sits in the corner under the windowsill, with no keyboard, no mouse, no nothing - just the aDSL modem, and it auto-reconnects when the connection drops which is cool. I have dns2go on it, and all the admin is done through SSH so I can get in remotely to reconfigure the connection sharing / firewall if people at home annoy me

I built myself a web server with a cheap mATX motherboad with intergrated sound/video and a 950Mhz AMD Duron chip. I did add replace the IDE HDD with two SCSI disks later. It runs Red Hat Linux with Apache and MySQL, plus SSH and FTP servers, on a cable connection. Unfortunately, my family didn't like the noise its makes at night...
Anyway, if your going to spend money, you can build yourself two Dual Athlon MP Servers with 15K RPM SCSI RAID 5 drives for what it costs for similar Dell, and have money left over.
Josh
Get these: Mozilla Opera OpenBSD
I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.
