.NET Framework Installation
This is really starting to drive me nuts....I can't install the .NET framework at all on Windows 2000.
What have I tried?
1. Running dotnetfx.exe from the Windows Component Update CD...(this is the install file). This unpacks the files, and then gives the error "Microsoft .NET Framework Setup has failed. If this continues, please contact Product Support."
2. I tried copying the file to my hard drive and running it; same problem.
3. I tried downloading the Framework redistributable from MS's site: it's the same file, and it gives the same error.
4. I downloaded the SDK from download.com: same error.
5. I went to windowsupdate.microsoft.com (finally got around Access Denied...) and downloaded like 20 security updates and such...The only thing left there to download for this computer is the .NET framework, which downloads and then promptly fails.
What haven't I tried?
1. I haven't tried installing in Safe Mode (in a thread a while back, Thinker said Safe Mode didn't allow the installation of .NET, or something like that...I dunno)
2. Reinstalling Windows. There's got to be a better way.
3. Something I haven't thought of yet that I hope you'll suggest to me...!
Additional Information
1. I'm running Windows 2000 (5.00.2195) SP 2
2. I do meet the system requirements
3. The first time I run the install file after I restart, I get past the point of the error. It starts to install iisadmin or something, but it gets like 2% and stops. The program isn't frozen completely (I can still interact with it; I can click cancel to exit it and such). I let it sit for like 10 minutes and nothing happened.

I read up on that, and I cannot seem to generate the log file...I run the program with the right parameters and such, but the log file doesn't seem to appear anywhere....
Well, I think that's everything there is to know.... Argh! So baffling....Thanks for any help, as always

You having any problems Jamie. Some one else raised this on one of the u2 sites (universe, unidata). Waiting on screen shots of the actual error messages (one of our clients as it turned out). We haven't had any problems on Win2k Prof. Did my fourth one yesterday. But this person was claiming huge problems on the server edition, maybe needs to be a .net server or something.

You are doing the framework install stuff first right? The only similar problem l have encountered was an odd error on one rig. A reboot tried again, error reboot yet again, and then it went fine... was falling over installed the database extensions... testing revealed the install went fine.

Nah I've not had any problems.
Have installed the .NET framework ( christ that was a big download ) on my own win2k laptop, and that worked perfectly.
Also installed VStudio .net ent arch on a winxp pro machine, and that worked perfectly too

Out of interest did you install all the demo stuff, gave that a big miss after the first install, "1 hour to go", well not including the extra hour for the samples

Em I think i've installed everything each time.
Takes sooooo long.
I thought people were taking the piss when they said it took a long time, but christ almighty does it take a long time.

But christ I was so surprised.
We had just received a brand new P-III 1GHz machine.
A nice looking HP system.
So I took it out of the box, plugged it in, turned it on, finished the installation of WinXP Pro, and then cracked out my VStudio .NET media kit.
And be jesus christ I wasn't expecting to wait that long.
First I had to install the framework (if i remember correctly), then reboot, then find the windows update cd, then reboot, and then it started the long installation

Yeah, we have it on DVD which is a huge piss off. Plug the disk in whirr whirr, ok setup windows components.... falls over a couple of times (just reboot and it continues), then it's hours of fun surfing the net while vs.studio makes you wander if you should have got a bigger hard disk...

It'd make you wonder what sort of machines they test this stuff on in Microsoft.
I remember reading that they compiled NT on a quad-Xeon machine.
Also, I dunno if you're into flight simulators at all.
I'm not really, but my girlfriend's dad is.
Anyway flightsim2000 was just... well...
He always likes having the biggest and best computer bits around.
So, at the time of flightsim2k, he had an awesome machine.
It was the very top spec around those days, a geforce something-or-other, bags of ram, and the game took a few minutes to load, and ran like ****.
Nobody could run the game in any of its proper graphics settings etc.
I dunno what they were at.
Flightsim2002 now works on normal machines

Know what you mean, am finding my first vs.net project takes for fecking ever to load up (only a few forms so far), and when you hit F5 you are left thinking the machine is about to freeze... maybe they designed it for P4 2.8, before they released it wouldn't run windows
Feck l'm being booted out of the office .... cya later
