Gibralter and N Ireland a very simlar situations. Ireland was also plantated by the Brits a long time ago. and whilst there are no native Gibratarians rebelling against British occupancy, what's to say that the natives didn't get pushed out to nearby Estapona or the like?
That is as maybe but what will handing control over to the Spanish achieve? Will it right wrongs of the past?
The Spanish came and Raided Mousehole in Cornwall a few hundred years ago. It's still a bit run down. I think it's about time that Spain coughed up for some money to restore the town to it's former glory, right?
As you say, the past is a chicken in the egg question. What's really important is the present and how it will effect people who are alive now. Giving (or sharing) sovereignty with Spain against the wishes of the vast majority of residents of Gibralta is, in my opinion, going to do more harm than good.
Everything I say is either loose interpretation of dubious facts or idle speculation rooted in irrational sentiment.

As far as I am aware, Gibralter was handed over to Britain as part of a treaty deal several hundred years ago. It wasn't just taken, although I would imagine it wasn't given up too enthusiastically.
I really don't understand why we're being so nice and accommodating about this. As far as I am concerned, without any other factors, it's our land and they can't have it. End of story.
There must be some kind of leverage that the Spanish have that I am unaware of. From what I can tell, we basically give them billions every year through the EU, and it seems slightly unreasonable that they should make even more demands.

Good morning Harry.
If the ppl of Gilbrater want to stay British the Spanish should piss off. Wasn't the Falklands conflict meant to be all about the Islanders there wanting to remain a part of Britian, or Maggie wanted a war or something...

When you say "we" I presume you mean the collective "we" of Europe rather than the UK. I say that because England only puts a tiny amount in more than they take out. Unlike Germany, for instance, who put a lot more money in than they do out.

To be honest Simon, I don't know exactly what I meant It was generic ranting. I don't know the exact quantities of who gives what to who, but I do know we put in more than we take out, and Spain takes out a lot more than it puts in.
