LAN Questions
I've never had time before to mess about with networking but decided to start today. So I've got two PCs side by side, ethernet adapter in both with a cable in between. The problem? One runs Windows 95 and the other runs Windows XP and they don't seem to be fond of talking. Windows XP can make a setup file on floppy disk to install on every other computer you want networked together but when you try and run it on Windows 95 it says you need at least Windows 98 because 95 doesn't support all the features Windows XP can give that I don't want like sharing an Internet Connection. Before you suggest upgrade, it costs and the idea of this was to get large files off the old computer and wipe it's hard-drive and maybe upgrade it. Also the newer one with XP continues to say the cable is unplugged when it is clearly in the back of both computers.
Has anyone every linked 95 and XP before? Please any help!!!

No one's replied so l guess no one has. Thinking outside the cube a bit, but have you got one of those Computer hire places near you. It should be relatively cheap to go hire a burner for a day and drop the files onto CD.

Can't u just do it manually??
Without the fancy XP Setup thing'a'me bob
Make sure your Network Cards are in right
Make sure u have a CAT5 CrossOver Cable
Install TCP/IP in the Win 95 (Client)
Ping the Win XP (Host PC)
Of course this isn't a very detailed guide, try http://www.homenethelp.com
Or just get yourself a copy of Win 98 off a friend or something. I have a Win 98 (Host) and Win XP (Client) which works well.
Tell me how u go, cause I want add another Computer(Win 95) to party later on.

I managed it finally but then I found out the older computer was over heating because the PSU fan was bust which is definitely not good so I've got to wait until I get a new PSU.

This worked for me in almost the exact same situation:
Leave your WinXP network settings set up the way they were to begin with, and don't bother with a network floppy disk because they never work anyway.
On your Win95, go to the network settings control panel. Hit "file and printer sharing" and check both boxes in there. Then Right click on "TCP/IP <Network card name>" and hit properties. Make sure that somewhere in there, you have selected "Assign IP automatically" or something like that.
WinXP should handle the rest...
Does that help?

The easy way would be to slave the old hdd to the xp box then get your files off that at no cost
