    Windows XP and VB 6

    I recently got a new Machine with XP Pro on it and now all my VB apps take for ever to start... do they have to be compiled differently? or what? its like i'm starting a java program... cuz it just sits and grinds for a good 30 seconds before the program even starts and this machine is 3 times as fast as my win 98 machine....

    I am running XP pro on my machine at home and I really think it runs slower than 2k... it has too many bells and whistles...

    as far as your compile question... there is no difference

    Well, I said this before on some other thread in here...

    I got VB6 PRO running on XP PRO, with 256mb on a AMD850MHZ, and the projects open up in a second.

    1) Make sure you have 256mb of RAM
    2) If you like the look of WIN2000, you can easily change it to CLASSIC from the Display settings...

    3) WinXP was proven to load some apps up to 30% faster than Win2000.

    I built my machine from scratch, so there is no OEM crap on it...

    As far as helping you with your situation, maybe you should try uninstalling and reinstalling VB6.

    i have a 1.8 Ghz with 512mb of ram and it takes this way longer to start one of my VB applications than it did on my win98 that was 833Mhz with 256bmb.

    once the app is up and running it runs smoother on the new system but takes for ever to start the app... almost like its compileing it or somting... like java....???

    You couldn't pay me to use Windows 98 on my home machine.

    As for the original issue, there is probably another issue on hand. I've written programs in 98 and ran them on a XP box and never encountered the problem you describe.

    Do you have a virus checker that scans everytime a file is changes, and are your apps doing a lot of file manipulation?

    Just a thought.

    I have norton CE on both machines so it should be hindering them both equaly.... but mabey the P4 is just a big piece of crap and should have got an AMD Athalon.... but the only slow point in the program is in the start up of it... once its up and running it runs great... and there is only one file access in the program startup... and thats just a 2 line text file that holds some settings.. and like i said on 98 it starts up great... but xp it starts poochy...

    Virus checker... definitely the problem most likely... good call....

    So disable it and see what happens.. and/or make sure ur using CE 7.6
