What's wrong with imperial then ? I mean, we're used to metric on the continent but as far as I'm concerned Imperial works just as well.

Metric is what I was taught at school (with a few exeptions; e.g miles) but I haven't a clue what a pound/ounce is so go for it I say

Metric is way easier, but imperial is what I was taught. I've learned enough metric to use it though.

they have to inforce it otherwise everyone will get away with it and we'll stay in the dark ages for the next few hundred years

Trouble with this country is we never innovate; we hang around watching other countries getting the **** on with it whilst we sit on the fence ****ting ourselves at the thought of doing something.

So you don't think we should embrace new age European thinking then Wally?

    Plan of action:

    a) remove all imperial measurements from society
    b) join Euro
    c) nuke France
    d) take over france...rename England II
    e) Get drunk in England II's vineyards
    f) threaten Germans with a big stick

    Sounds like a plan !
Seriously though, I think the European idea of integration and cooperation is a good one but you can't force it upon your members. The UK is perfectly entitled to make his own policies.
The phrase 'typically British' applies to what you mentioned yourself : british conservatism and fear of change.

But on the whole : it's your country. Who cares what I think about it

How about they nuke Quebec instead? It's kind of like France if French people were lumberjacks and lived in the arctic.

we'll just convince him that Chirac is harbouring Taliban fighters in Sangatte...shouldn't be too difficult since Bush won't know who he is or if Sangatte is in Texas or Florida.

Sunderland Council placed an order for some animal feeds during the original trial.

Yes, you guessed it they ordered 15 hundredweight of wild bird seed, not 750 kilos.

    Imperial! Imperial! Imperial! Imperial!

I was taught metric at school, but to be honest I prefer imperial most of the time. I like my miles, my pounds and ounces and feet and inches, it makes more sense to me. Can I stay in the dark ages?

actually, I use both and know them both pretty well, and I like Imperial better. Imperial measurements were designed so that you didn't need a specific device to measure accurately. One foot is(you won't believe this) the length of your foot! Now why would anyone want a system that simple?

Please Stay Out Of My Bathroom...

What's next, they're gonna start telling people how to hang the toilet paper? Why not just ask the farmers to put the metric somewhere on their signs, even if it's smaller, if that at all? Seems like a whole lot of fuss over something petty...

Doesn't look like an inch to me. Isn't it the distance from your thumb knuckle to the tip of your thumb? That looks more like an inch. Maybe I have hideously disfigured thumbs and never realised.

I too thought his statement was a bit optimistic...I reckon you could be right about the knuckle to tip

Completely pointless bit of trivia: an inch when first invented was the length of 3 beans (of some variety) layed end to end

I dont care witch one you all use but for god's sake make up your minds already. I'm tired of having to sort both Metric and Imperial Sockets in my tool chest.
