Odd survey..
This is a simple survey. I am trying to see which language most mathematical individuals prefer. Simply find the answer, and once you're sure, post your name,your language of choice, and the answer you arrived at. If you are thinking of copying someone's answer, remeber, it might not be right. And every wrong answer s a -1 for that language. The question is:
Theis figure has a total area of 108 square units and is a rectangle composed of three congruent, smaller rectangles. Find the sum of the length and width of one of the smaller rectangles. Express your answer in simplest radical form.
--Rectangle #1--
_____|____________
|aaaaaaaaaa|aaaaaa|
|aaaaaaaaaa|aaaaaa|
|__________|aaaaaa|-Rectangle #2
|aaaaaaaaaa|aaaaaa|
|aaaaaaaaaa|aaaaaa|
|aaaaaaaaaa|aaaaaa|
--------|-------
Rectangle #3

By the way, the language with the most points will of course gain bragging rights. If you don't know the answer, and want your language to win, you don't have to post. Good luck. By the way, I have the correct answer and my favorite language is C++.

Well, does anyone have an idea? Surely you, who talk about dividing by 0, infinity, imaginary numbers, can tell me how big one of those squares is? I enjoy this.

well, if you don't count my vote, there is a tie between all languages now, as one of you got it and the other didn't. that's all I'm saying now.

oh i just realised people were posting thier answers in this thread in that case i got the same answer as stevecrm. I was posting my answer in the other thread. How are the stats now?

you posted one incorrect answer, and are thus disqualified.

this is a test to see which language gets the most correct answers. Answer it if you want your opinion to matter here.

alright this is a sad day. C++ is the loser with a score of -1.(sorry Gandolf you were disqualified). The answer was 9*sqr(2)

arghh the only reason i was disqualified was because i failed to simplify 108 / sqrt(72) down to 9 * sqrt(2). Then i thought i made a mistake, went back again and got 9 * sqrt(2) the second time. Perhaps i should get part marks?

My favorite language is Algol.
Length = 6*Sqr(2)
Width = 3*Sqr(2)
Sum = 9*Sqr(2)

I'm sorry, there is now way alive what you have can be right. Think about it. Thirteen is not possible, becuase that value has to be evenly divisble by 3 for the diagram to be correct.

Q:?
What language returns sqrt(2), instead of a decimal value for said mathematical concept?
How did you program your progie to return 9*sqrt(2), instead of
something like 12.727922yadayadayada???

I am going to waste my vote on Turing just b/c my school use it. (btw it sux). its a language that has similar coding structures to that of Pascal. its slow. it is an educational laugage thats designed to teach u concepts and is used across Ontario Canada.

Hmmm. Well, I'm puzzled by one thing.
With your usage of x and y, the right rect has a width of x, and an apparant height of 2x, while the two left rects have a height of x and a width of y.
From the stated problem, how do you know that?

since all the rects are congruent, i made x = one side and y = the other side.

MARKAMN:
when the two are multiplied together, it must give you 36.
sqrt(3)*12*sqrt(3)=108. That's the area of the large rectangle, and 3x the smaller ones.

AAAhhhh, Gotcha. But then:
3xy = 108
so
xy = 36
Now, y = 2x, so…
2x^2 = 36
so
x^2 = 18
therefore
x = sqrt(18) or…
3*sqrt(2)
Right???

Right???
Right. But, if you were to take the 2 sides of the rect found by everyone else's way, and plug them into my equasion, they wouldnt work either. Im still wondering: is there a problem with the way I did it? cause if not, there are multiple solutions

BTW,
You say (xx)*(xy) = 108, BUT....
Shouldn't that be:
(x+x)*(x+y) = 108
???
