    Reccomended Books

    Hi.

Whilst i'm not new to VB. I am however new to Games Programming. Using the site search to search for threads amd posts relating to games programming books i found none. The only thing I found was people saying just to buy a book.

Using the Internet search engines I found a few books. However, the user reviews which were attached to them often had conflicting views.

So I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations about which books a Lowish-Medium skill programmer should buy.

    Thanks,

    Pete

I looked into that book and found nothing but good reviews and praise. However, it seems to be focused mainly on graphics, I found no indication that it was anything to do with games programming, only graphics.

It is all graphics, but it is an invaluable reference. When it comes to starting out in games with VB, you will be mostly focused on graphics anyway, and once you get that step down, most everything else is common sense, and you should be able to figure out how things are supposed to work. You will also be able to find tutorials around the internet, or post any questions here.

I recommend the book, simply because it is probably the most invaluable reference that I own (and I dont even program graphics in VB anymore). I still use the book for the various algorithms used.

Also, most books you will find out there are going to be in C++, or will be about DirectX. I have never seen a book that deals strictly with general games programming in VB.

    Hi,
At Barnes and Noble last week I spent a few minutes reading through a book called (this is from memory)... "Teach Yourself Game Programming in VB in 21 Days or 24 Hours". No reference to DirectX. However, some pretty good concepts on basic gaming especially with 2D stuff. The author even spent time on linked lists and other basic game things.
It may be a place to start.

The VB Graphics Programming book by Stephens is definitely a great reference. My book came with a nice DEMO CD with cool graphics.

    Regards,
    ChuckB
