Novell Client does a fine job of downgrading my 700Mhz at work to about 66Mhz. And why on earth would you want it on NT4.0? As far as I understand, NT4.0 has the ability to provide all the rollout services and security that Novell offers?

Novell's NDS technology came out years before Microsoft had anything remotely like it
And Intranetware's TCP/IP packets actually travel over networks faster that NT/2000's TCP/IP packets

As you can tell, I'm no expert in networking or TCP/IP protocols, but it seems strange to me that the 2nd biggest merchant bank in the world is running Novell Client on NT4.
I understand that Novell's product can send packets quicker than NT, but the thing sits heavy on my PC, like trying to run with soaking wet trousers

Yes quite a bit.
Inherently built into NDS is the ability to remotely administer printers, file servers, print servers etc.
Also the ability to see network utilization in specific servers and to have alerts send to administrators and all that.

To do that under NT/2000 you'll need to buy MOM Server and a few other .NET Servers.

Add to that the fact that NT/2000 are not C2 secure, novell on the other hand is

Impressive on paper. My wife works for Nomura International, a massive japanese Investment bank, and uncharachteristically forward thinking in their system architecture. (e.g. they installed Win2000 all over their European operation at the end of last year, way ahead their competition) - they don't touch Novell however.
Why would major companies like that not use Novell if it has such clear benefits?

Because they do no marketing.
None whatsoever.
Its long been accepted that that is why novell are losing so much market share.

They just let Microsoft piss all over them.

The corporate mantra is "Notes is the perfect document handler" - mmm, I dig the 16bit GUI and complete disregard for usability

I much prefer using windows sharing to find things that using an intranet.

just Start > Run > \\ntserver\company\software\

instead of going into http://ntserver , putting in a username and password, and then trying to find what you're looking for.

Check this for anal: our illustrous admini-satans have disabled the Run menu item and cmd.exe from our start menus...

As well as recieving flamemail if you receive jpgs, gifs or bmps from outside (i.e. your mates, regardless of content) - if we need to send screenshots to NY office - internal email - we have to embed the pics in MS Word - really lightweight.

I also got repremanded when I was a permie here 5 years ago for receiving an avi from a mate, of a girl with her funbags out. I still have the warnign on my file

I've got pretty much free run across our entire Unix network, which is cool (nothing like playing the text adventure game inside emacs to make a slow afternoon go quicker )

I'd quite like to kill our web (intranet) based document management system as well....badly written in Java...ick....
