I wouldn't go that far chris, in win2k you can delete a file in dos or ntfsDos and delete a file in the system32 folder.

Although forgetting your password is usually a bad move

oh I agree but when you hyperthetically work for a police station and lets say you confiscate a laptop from a criminal, he ain't going to tell you his password. but that is hyperthetical.....

I think you have to now or face long jail sentences, if they suspect the laptop was involved in the crime (if it wasn't then they can't because it's an invasion of privacy).

yup they think is was involved but I think the criminal doesn't remember the password, but I don't know the whole story as I just work in the IT department.

I always thought the Police had state-of-the-art password sniffers and brute force cracker stuff etc...
I once saw a Dutch cop using a laptop with a password sniffer and password dictionary hacking a criminals laptop.

Yes, that's true. But if you got the WinXP password, at least you can take a look. And then if you see a file named "Illegal_Transactions.xls" or "Dear Godfather.doc" you know you're on the right track.

Actually, all you'd see is a 512mb file called "stuff.pgd"
