Mac OS X, but since I don't have a Mac, XP with all the gh3yn355 turned off.

Monday Morning Lunatic
It's a close match between Win2000 and Linux. I actually use them both simultaneously

OpenBSD vs Linux....Intriguing point - I never saw much difference between the different variants, actually.
BSD is closer to the real "Unix" though, isn't it?

Server stuff, but I can't think of anything else (well, anything practical)
Win2K for me..I'm sure if I ran a dedicated server it would be using Linux...but I don't

Well, I finally got to try Windows XP, and it has to get my vote. I've decided that, in my opinion, Windows XP is definitely better than Windows 2000. It boots up much quicker and hibernation actually works for me. It's also finally possible for me to actually disable all the desktop icons.
I can't vote for any form of Linux, because I simply don't know how to use it.

2000's bootup speed isn't an issue for me It only tends to get restarted once a week or so, if I make any changes to it.
I like my desktop icons
Just out of interest, do you prefer the new "task-based" folders, or the existing style?

I used to keep the computer on full-time, but I eventually stopped doing that. Even when it was on full-time, the boot-up time in Win2K would become an issue whenever the time came to actually restart it, such as when installing hardware.
Well, my desktop icons are gone, and this has rendered the Win+D keyboard shortcut virtually useless. Also, this makes my screenshots look better when all the windows are minimized or closed.
I'm not completely sure what you mean by task-based folders. If you're talking about the new layout of the control panel were it takes two clicks to get to anything instead of just one, it doesn't bother me at all. This is because the control panel is set to act like a menu in the start menu, so I rarely ever actually open up a Control Panel window. Just now, I had to open it up just to find out whether or not the new style is still enabled (it was).
Does this "task-based folders" feature show up anywhere else in WinXP, other than the control panel?

I never had any trouble whatsoever under 98SE, except that I couldn't reinstall it after a rebuild.
Now I'm using 2kpro sp2 and its the dogs bollocks

I use XP, but without all the flowers. It never crashes, never falls over, never hangs, boots at turbo speed. I'm impressed with it.
But surely, there are more interesting things to talk about than favourite operating systems...?

I like the task-based folders, but only when it gets it right. It keeps displaying folders as thumbnails just because it's got 1 picture, or icon or something - it gets really annoying after a while.

Did you even get rid of My Computer, My Network Places, and the Recycle Bin? I was able to get rid of all of them but one. I don't remember which one wouldn't go away, but I ended up keeping those three.

Just a personal preference. I'd rather not have any desktop icons. I couldn't do it in Win2K, and I was able to do it in WinXP. That's all.

I barely see much of my desktop, actually
Although when I do, I use what's on there. Most of the stuff I use is in my quicklaunch; my desktop's only a Win-D away

its quite funny, at school we have this message board, and a bunch of stupid grade 10's were on there completely trashing winodws saying how it was the devil, etc you have all heard the propoganda. anyways i posted once in this 200+ post discussion. i said
"Its all very nice that you embrace alternatives for Windows however i must ask you, how many of you have tried something besides windows?"
not one person had tried linux, openBSD, freeBSD Unix mac OSx etc. all of them had only used windows. I find it quite funny how people can trash something in favour of an alternative which they havn't tried

I disagree. In Win2K, I never used those three icons that were there. In fact, the recycle bin was disabled. Now that I have no desktop icons in WinXP, I don't feel that I'm missing anything.

Interestingly, I also have the quick launch toolbar disabled. I have hotkeys set up for most of the stuff I use.

When I said all, i meant it =). No My Computer, No My Network Places, No Recycle Bin, nothing. My desktop is a blank grey screen. Its a little thing called Active Desktop, and it comes with IE =).
I have actually found it easier to work without my icons. I have a couple of shortcuts on my desktop(hidden, of course), with keyboard shortcuts on them... ctrl+alt+m for My Computer, ctrl+alt+c for C: drive, ctrl+alt+d for D: drive, ctrl+alt+w for winamp... and beyond that, its quick launch, auto hidden on the right side of my screen.

The OS I like best is SlackWare Linux, and then Win2k(But it doesn't install on my pc - like all NT OSes).
So I just stick with Win98, it works fine.

Now that it'll actually let me reply, I mean the BSD-derived ones, rather than Linux/GNU-based.

Err, I mean BSD as opposed to System V My understanding is that they are the two main kinds of Unix, from a code fork ages ago.
