Hi Judd!
-Have you tried downloading new drivers for the card, or moving it to other slots?
-Try selecting different sound environments in the games, from the audio/sound setup!

it could also be a delay with the CD's
try switching the drives about... also there is an option to stop the puter from halting the disk from spinning when not in use..
my GF had a problem with her Creative x48 drive... when the disk stopped spinning ... i.e. it was no longer needed... then the computer would hang next time anything tried to access the cd-rom

I am not an expert at this, but try the following possible solutions.
1. Read the README.TXT file or any similar file that comes with the drivers and follow the instructions about the IRQ settings, etc...
2. Choose your prefered sound device and make windows use prefered device only (Settings > Control Panel > Multi Media)
3. Try Windows Trouble Shooter
4. Try changing the PCI slot. PCI 2 is preferable. However I had the same problem a few weeks back (VB Forums Link). Originally it was in PCI 2. My sound card was fixed loosely in it. My USB socket also contributed to it being loose, since the port was very close to PCI 2. It was not tight enough. I changed over to PCI 1 and now it works fine. I had also enabled Louder volume by changing a jumper setting on my sound card. Maybe it might work for you also.
