And blame the network not the server. Could you do a tracert next time, so that we can get some idea of where the problem is?
Thanks,
John

Well I find it quite difficult to use the forums at times.
Happened earlier this morning.
Anyway, right now its working fine, and here is my own trace.
I'll try another trace when it won't work for me

plenderj, that looks like a problem with your ISP to me.
And of course we run Linux, don't want PHP/MySQL on Windows!?!

Still weird though John, the board does seem extremely slow for several minute intervals for no reason. Then again vB's support forums do that too every now and then too but these get a lot more traffic.

Ah well doesn't bother me
And don't you think thats a little ... well ... I'm not sure of a proper adjective, but running a site about windows programming on a linux server.
Just seems odd
Also, why not use proper SQL Server on a windows server ?
It'd kick mySQL's ass!

vB hasn't been ported to work with SQL Server, only MySQL, and they say that they have no intentions to change.

For some reason I doubt that John and the devs would port the several thousand lines of PHP code to use SQL Server rather than MySQL just because somebody thinks it's crap. The main reasons it uses MySQL in the first place is because (1) it's really fast, (2) it's free, and (3) most hosts who offer PHP offer only MySQL because of (1) and (2).

To hell with getting someone to host the forums.
Just build a fast server, and have the server hosted in a server farm somewhere.
And surely PHP can be used with SQL ?

yes it can, but as has been said, MySQL is one of the fastest RDMS there is, SQL Server is poor in comparison.

Right so according to the analysis popup window, SQL server outdoes mySQL on everything but performance on JSP pages.
And the tests are also for extremely high utilization of the servers, not just normal activity.
And according to this :
http://common.ziffdavisinternet.com/...atures_SQL.xls
mySQL seems to do sweet FA in comparison to the other database servers

as far as I'm aware, mysql's strength is in it's SELECT ability but INSERTS aren't as good. So it depends what you want to do with it
and it costs nothing
DB2 Universal Database 7.2
$20,000 per CPU (unlimited users)
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP2
$19,999 per CPU
MySQL 4.0
Free download; commercial license up to $200
Oracle9i Database
$40,000 per CPU (or $800 per named user)
What about SQL Servers shocking error rate?! 10%!!

lol, yep
Dunno about you but I haven't got 20 grand to spend on that. If you have, well then fair enough I guess you get what you pay for.
mysql is still the most popular and in the end popularity wins over. And it's good for mission critical stuff...I doubt anything from MS can be considered so

If you are going to put up the money for all these wonderful changes to MS software, then go ahead. Otherwise accept that we will continue to use free software as long as VB World is run as a free service by us.

Okay.
So if one of our companies gives you some decent kit, with Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000 1CPU installed, you'd port VBF ?

Nothing wrong with free software anyway, plus I expect you get better support for Linux/MySQL/PHP.....
Just out of interest, John, what's the technical spec of the server and how many sites are running off it?

I though John has two servers for us?
Josh
Get these: Mozilla Opera OpenBSD
I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.

As far as I knew, there were two (web and mysql), but they ran vbworld (and the forums), vbulletin.com, and vbulletin.org.....

I think, too long since I last looked, approx 2 Dual P3-850, 1GB RAM, SCSI hard disks, one for DB, one for web server. Average about 400k pages per day, 250 people online most of the time. Load rarely gets high, particularly on the DB server.
