    DVD Burner

Last time I looked into buying a DVD burner people said to hold off because there where two standards in play.
Has the industry settled on one format yet?

Not that I am aware of. Some are still making DVD-RAM devices, which use DVD discs inside cartridge-like devices. Then there is also DVD-R/RW which is just like CD-R/RW with a lot more space. I think the industry should go with the R/RW format because it would be cheaper to make the media than to make the cartridge-type things.

Another good reason to hold off is the price. Not even 6 months ago these things were over $500 US. Now I've seen both types at about $250 US, and some even a little less. Within the next 6 months I imagine they will drop down even farther, just like CD-RWs did. I payed $180 for my 4x CD-RW when it first came out, then I paid just $129 for my 24x CD-RW because I waited until the 32x CD-RWs came out.

im not exactly sure what the speeds are now on DVD-R/RWs but lets say 8X and DVDs will hold what somewhere around 5 Gigs. At 8X a 700 MB CD-R takes approx. 10 minutes. So a full DVD at 8X would take around an hour or so. Some one with more exact numbers could give a better answer.

You would think at 10X it would take 50 mins.

That's not bad considering the amount of data you are moving!

DVD burners are at 2x, but 2x DVD is faster than even the fastest CDR burners...

I don't remember the exact numbers though...
