Installing Win2k
I currently have Windows ME (bah) on my computer and am going to install Windows 2000 on it. Will this be like a regular upgrade, or will I lose my data and files in the process?

I personally would reformat and start from scratch with a full install.
Back up anything important either way - you can never be too paranoid with backups.
Josh
Get these: Mozilla Opera OpenBSD
I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.

I agree with JoshT. You don't want old WinME files mucking around with nice purdy Win2k
I'm bringing geeky back...

For sure do a low level reformat, you just can't kill off ME ... it lurks around every corner .... do three backups of data in case two fail..... which leads me to a new thread on killing ME.....

no need to do a low level format. beside the HD manufactures don't recommend of doing a low level format on the new generation of hard drives. when they ship to you they are already done a low level, and / windows installed.
besides thatr when you do a win2000 install it will fdisk it as ntfs if you chose to go that way.

I have gigs of data that needs to be backed up. I don't have enough resources to do three backups

make a quick and dirty partition to store all your data, then just wipe C:\ (or wherever ME is)

Maybe I could throw in an old hard drive and put all my stuff on that?

This is what I usually do. I have a partition to store all my backups. If I'm going to do a format and re-installation of my OS, I move all my important stuff to my backup partition then format my active partition. I also move all my backup info to a CD-R cd.

I usually just put everything on CD-RWs and CD-Rs

I'm going to buy a new hard drive soon to store all my data on. I'll just use C:\ for programs and the new one for storing saved files, mp3s, etc. That way I can just whipe C:\ and not worry about it.
After I buy that, I'll buy Win2k and install it. But I gotta fix my car first.
