Im responce to the this thread:

I think we should all ge together and create a VB kind of napster. It would be easy for people to access the codes and download them so many could learn VB. People would improve in there coding skills and more. I would be interested in helping to write the napster type program. If anyone else is, post away!

I would love to help make that, but we would need someone with a 24/7 DSL or Cable connection so they can host the server.
they would necesarily need the files on there computer, they just need to be there so they can be connected to.

PRIVATE1:
AWESOME Flash intro
how did ya make that?
I have Flash 4 and it came with a book but the book sucks!
did you buy a seperate book or did you just learn on your own?
although it may seem easy, because all it is is you putting pic's together, but it is pretty hard.

We got a server
Well, everyone, looks like we have a server to host it on. Thanx oetje for leting us use your cable. I think we may still need more ppl to help with this project. Although PRIVATE1's program is a start, its got a ton of bugs. If anyone is willing with me, we should all get on ICQ and talk about what to do with this project. Programming/features/ideas/etc.

I'm Interested
I'd love to join the team. I'm already work on an ICQ\Napster hybrid, I've got not much done, but a lot planned already, including transfering against server crashes. But I'm having trouble with WinSock, hence my posts in that section...
We really should get together on ICQ and work together on this. On ICQ my nickname is Captain Pinko, the #79496282. Everyone seriously interested post your ICQ stuff here, add each other to our contact lists and start the ball rollin'!

I would like to join the team, but I dont really want to do much coding, maybe beta testing and helping people a little,
I have started like 3 group projects already and I havent finished any of them, I dont really like to be forced to finish something by a certain time.
I know I am gonna need to learn if I get a programming job

How about a more Gnutella-like utility which would allow for multiple servers? I would very much like to be part of the project, however I do not have a lot of Winsock programming experience with VB.
Also, I am using a DSL connection, so I could qualify for being a "secondary" server or something like it, hence the question about multiple servers.
Shouldn't there be a web page to explain the project to the people at large, recruit new members and post new versions of the program? I would gladly make one or help make one should the need arise.
I can also translate the program in french, although I doubt many would find that useful
Can I be part of the project? Should I contact someone in already in (by using their ICQ #)?

Maybe it's better to let Raggart be the first server, because he is on DSL. Let's compare the upstream speeds. I don't know mine, but I think it's only something like 15 KB/PS

Sadly enough, so is mine... That's why I was thinking of being only the secondary server! However, I should be getting a speed upgrade (if my provider can move his ***) in a couple of months, boosting the upload speed at close to 60kb/s. I could then be transferred to be the "main" server if this is project is still alive by then (which I hope because it does sound like a really good idea).

How do you join the active list?!?!
By the way, I think the project will last! (tons of response) And the final product will probably be out in a few weeks. Private1, try to keep the source closed, especially the final one.

I don't know if I can explain, but on ICQ you should have 3 buttons on the top
One of them is for activating the ActiveList.
Then a window will pop up in the contact list. You should click on:
"Find/Add An ICQ ActiveList"
then find by the #:

Why not just use plain ICQ and e-mail?
Ok, why don't we just get the ICQ# and e-mail address of everyone who would like to get involved? My ICQ# number is:
5263035 (Raggart)
my e-mail address is: [email protected]
I hope I don't get spammed because of people reading this By the way, I've looked through the source code and it looks promising. We should set a standard before we begin real work though (i.e. Naming convention, comments, etc.). I'm wary about the CPU and bandwidth use the current version would cause, has it been tested at all?
Thanks,
Raggart

The secret is...
don't use a central server.
Use a certain port and have everyone always sharing their lists of know users. (In the beginning it would be a problem)
Make it a file transfer program in which you can select a file type i.c. MP3. have a naming convention so people can save their files in such a way that a search could be done.
Because there is no server you cannot under no circumstance be shut down.
Yes, it won't run as quickly as napster but
I would work

You are already in, I was talking about everyone that isn't part of the project yet. Also, when the program is completed it will find all file types. We're using mp3's right now cause there one of the most simplest file types.

Make it a generic file sharing program, not for music or vbcode, but just for file sharing and no one can touch you. Especially if you have a centralized server! (an added complicaiton

Concerning the Server...
Having no srever and just having users share lists of other users would make things messy and a pain in the ass to search for files. My idea is select your server on login, that way if they shut you down someone else can run the program on their comp, all they would have to do is leave a message on a private board or mass E-Mail with the new settings. The main principle of modern warfare is the ability to pack up and move elsewhere, quickly and painlessly..
