.NET for *nix ?
I heard a while back that Microsoft would be developing the .NET framework for *nix
Is this true, in which case, one could develop VB.NET applications for execution on any platform, in much the same way as one can java applications...?

Well if MS is going to officially support *nix platforms, that may be a bit unlikely, but they have already release Rotor, a FreeBSD port, and ximian, the makers of Gnome for Linux, are working on Mono..http://www.go-mono-com
It is coming along very nicely now as they almost got ADO .NET functional...Also Gtk# which will allow you to create graphical interfaces for Gnome in .NET is in the works but so far about all it does is let you click a button on a form..besides that, you cna writely fairly functional console apps with Mono now.
Now if I can get the damn thing to install on my Red Hat machine to test it

That truly would be systems integration if it was released for other platforms.
Lets just ignore java, because it doesnt count
