    Ack !!

Between MegaTwat and Arc, my head hurts.

Dang...I hate radicals....and with them you got both extremes of da good ol' US of A.

I still think the USA would make a great 4 different countries. Northeast...South...Mid and North-west...and California. Split the country up and solve 99% of the problems we have.

Texas, of course, we give back to the Mexicans.

I just realized that this thread is similar to passing by a terrible car accident. You don't want to look because it's so gruesome, but somehow it draws you to it. Then you see the rescue workers trying feverishly to rescusitate the victims, you see the Highway Patrol directing traffic around the accident so noone else will get injured, and you see the person who caused the accident screaming at the police as they try to restrain him. The witness to this fiasco are trying hard to understand how it happened and why they were caught up in it yet they can't just walk away without having their statements taken!!!

I know exactly who I would cast in all the roles. How did it get this far from my original intent?

And I'm the rubbernecker that managed to go off the motorway, up the embankment, and roll past the scene...

Much as I would love English to become the universal language, it won't happen for a very long time.

Look at how zealous the French Canadians are about protecting French. The French people are slightly more tolerant, but still want to defend their language.

As for non-english websites, there are loads of them. I suppose it depends on what you are searching for. If you're looking up British/American things or international corporation, then yes, you will hit mostly English web sites of course. But I've just been off looking up DAF cars (my brother had one years ago), I think you will find most of the relevant sites are in Dutch or German.

Some people are willing to hijack anything... It's a shame, because the first couple you posted were really quite funny.

Don't know which role I'd end up in, but I'll apologise anyway, just in case.

You've just underlined every single trait the rest of the world hates in some Americans ranging from tunnel vision to sheer ignorance and arrogance.

Damn! Somehow I managed to miss reading the last two pages of this thread before I posted my reply. (I don't know how)

If I'd seen this quote I'd have know that Arc was just having a laugh. Sorry, I didn't realise you weren't being serious, but as has already been mentioned this line gave the game away.

Many apologies, but just to drag this back on-topic...

    From http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html :
    4. If you don't have functional English, learn it.

As an American and native English-speaker myself, I have previously been reluctant to suggest this, lest it be taken as a sort of cultural imperialism. But several native speakers of other languages have urged me to point out that English is the working language of the hacker culture and the Internet, and that you will need to know it to function in the hacker community.

This is very true. Back around 1991 I learned that many hackers who have English as a second language use it in technical discussions even when they share a birth tongue; it was reported to me at the time that English has a richer technical vocabulary than any other language and is therefore simply a better tool for the job. For similar reasons, translations of technical books written in English are often unsatisfactory (when they get done at all).

Linus Torvalds, a Finn, comments his code in English (it apparently never occurred to him to do otherwise). His fluency in English has been an important factor in his ability to recruit a worldwide community of developers for Linux. It's an example worth following.
I refuse to tie my hands behind my back and hear somebody say "Bend Over, Boy, Because You Have It Coming To You".
