Can I upgrade my RAM?

Right now I have 2 256MB DDR ram sticks in my PC... My Mobo is a compaq model 07BCh and I was wondering if it's possible to get rid of these and put in 2 512s... I dont know if that's gonna work or not so that's why I'm asking...

by the way, I dont know if it's gonna be any helpful but it says that my Max Module Capacity is 1.5GB... (is that my max ram or what?)

If it says the max module capacity is 1.5GB then i would assume they are refering to the maximum amount of ram you system can take. I wish my computer took 1.5Gb. I think mine can only take 3 somthing.

A maximum RAM limit of 1.5GB doesn't really make sense for a motherboard with only two slots. Many motherboards support up to 512MB per DIMM. So if the limit is 1.5GB, the motherboard would usually have three slots. I haven't heard of any DIMM's coming with 768MB (what the maximum capacity per DIMM would have to be). They might exist, but I don't know about them.

I think that Max Module Capacity is probably the maximum capacity per DIMM, which would place the total memory limit at 3GB.

If you go to crucial.com they have a system that will tell you what RAM you can use and what your max capacity is. Also, they have v cheap RAM there.

Crucial's RAM isn't always the cheapest. I suggest that you shop around and get what looks best. I usually check newegg.com. I've even seen NewEgg hold Crucial RAM cheaper than on Crucial.com.

I went to curcial and they gave me chart with what one does and what kind of memory they need so... under mine is said:

Heavy Graphics Design
3D CAD software, modeling software 2GB and up

My systme froze once already when I tried running Maya Unlimited (witch was taking like 300MB) plus talking on AIM and listening to music so I guess they are right

1.5GB is a theoretical limit, they don't make 768MB RAM sticks.

Shoulda just gone with an Abit KR7A or Shuttle AK31 with 4 nice DIMM slots but oh well

I agree with Tygur, Crucial isn't always the cheapest, and they aren't always the best either. Head over to Newegg and pick up some Kingston, Samsung, or Crucial PC2100 DDR (whichever is cheapest), cheap and reliable. You can't OC that thing anyway so don't worry about OCability.

Sell off those 256MB sticks on eBay or www.amdforums.com .
