Finding 'south' from the Southern Cross

    SH question chaps..

When I was in the cadet corps at school a gazzilion years ago we were told we could find South by extending the long part of the Sn Cross 4 1/2 times and dropping to the horizon.

Lately I've been testing that and it seems accurate. But....

.. is the 41/2 rule related to my lat/long or ***?

The way i would do it, is find the brightest star in the southern cross, or preferablly the moon. Then use the light from it to read the compass in your hand. The arrow thingy points North.
