This may be a cultural difference. What I remember from very early on was that it was SARS COV-2, which was clearly NOT something novel, since SARS COV-1 isn't all that long ago.

The bit about vitamins being a preventative has been around for a very long time. Whether or not they ever protect you isn't clear. They certainly haven't protected me. I get a pretty solid dose of both C and D each day, but I get about the same number of common colds as anybody I'm around. If I get any less, I certainly haven't noticed it.

The Vitamin C craze seems to have started around the late 70s, or so, at least in the US. There is plenty of information about it in mainstream media and elsewhere. However, that's the US. I felt that the whole thing about Vitamin C was part of the counter-culture stuff of the late 70s, which comes with a whole bunch of political baggage of its own. Other countries may have different experiences.
