Sorry, misconception.

The apostrophe is legal if being used in a non-noun context and has 'internal punctuation'. Therefore, SSD's is still a possessive form, whereas SSDs is plural. If an acronym is all lower case or you're pluralizing a lower case letter, then the apostrophe is required.

Correct: x's
Wrong: X's
Correct: HDs, OSs, OSes
Wrong: HD's, OS's
Correct: ME
Wrong: YOU!
