URGENT!!!

I recieved an e-mail from a known person with nothing at the subject field and just with an attached file called "RoadSigns.gif". I suspect it's a virus that uses addresses books to spread itself so I deleted the message at once without opening the file.

Has someone recieved such a message and knows if it's really a virus or am I worried for nothing?
